Hella back in the day they outsourced through ABS, I believe. But no longer.

Nutrend is the site that was nearly identical to Newegg in every respect except the price which was always like $.50 higher for everything. LOL.

Newegg doesn't run another site, per-say, but they are a webfront for a big parts distributor; I don't know that name, however.

I don't mean to derail the original question/topic (I hate it when it happens to me!), but while we're on the subject of Newegg's identity:

Back in the late 80's there was a company called Egghead Software. I wasn't into computers at the time, but I remember they had retail stores here in Southern California and sold -- you guessed it -- software. This was before the Web became mainstream, of course, and before computers started appearing on every desktop.

Egghead Software is no longer around (I don't think, anyway), so I was wondering if anyone knows if that company morphed into what's now known as Newegg. It would make sense: sort of a "We used to be Egghead, but now we're the New egg ...."

Am I way off base, or is this what happened? Anyone happen to know?

Let's not all get off track here and forget the original question. I'm just wondering about this. :)

I asked them about this as I used to order a lot from Egghead. The rep. said it's a different company.

Different company.

Somebody emailed them asking this question a few months ago.

Newegg is an offshot of ABS Computers, while Egghead became Egghead.com and was later bought out by Amazon.com. 2 different companies.

Funny... I just emailed Newegg asking them about their relationship to Egghead a few days ago. The CS Rep they get that question ALL the time ;-) And yes, he gave me the same answer - nothing to do with them.

I tried searching unsucessfully for it, but I know there was a thread, I believe in OT, by KristopherKubicki
or NFS2 or somebody that chronicles how Newegg got started. It was posted probably a little over a year ago.

-----Edit-----

Found it, though it was a reply and not a topic like I thought.

I happen to have met the NewEgg founders a couple times and this is something we talk about often.

NewEgg actually started as a spin off of ABS computers. ABS has been around a "long time" as they started building systems in the early nineties i believe. ABS did so well because they were able to continually use their purchasing power to leverage bulk quanity deals. I like to think of them as the first true Distributor-Reseller. Up until about a year ago most of the big distributors (Ingram, Synnex, D&H, Ma Labs) did not sell to customers directly.

So anyways, ABS was getting all these great bulk item deals for its system components. NewEgg and eventually NuTrend were part of ABS's plan to push items directly to consumers. Since ABS was already around for some 8 (i think) years before NewEgg was started, the owners used the ABS name for buying power/leverage. Sometimes, its not what you know, its who you know.

I answered the egghead question like 6 months ago with actual links. Just google egghead and merger.

So if Nutrend is also owned by ABS computers then why are they just slightly higher in price?

Ahh I was going to say, I had bought some hardware from Egghead back in 96 but I wasn't sure if they were still around.

Heh When a company like Newegg.com is so popular, people tend to want to know everything about it.

i dont understand. as of right now. newegg isnt working, nutrend doesnt exist (merged) and abspc basically has nothing much in stock.

someone tell me whats up Newegg has everything i needed yesterday and its a hassle to find other places. (especially from places i trust)

unless of course you guys know any other good places with as much gear that newegg has at around the same prices.

I remember when Egghead was part of a big hacker theft of credit card information from some online CC security company. I got an email from them saying as much at the time.

I don't know if it was related, but a few months later I was a victim of identity theft using the same card I had on file with Egghead. (They opened a Yahoo pay direct account in my name and made some charges).

I think NCIX in Canada might also be connected to Newegg - at least their web site design is very similar.

So why's newegg so expensive if thier a distro too? I find better prices at gameve, mwave, zipzoomfly all the time. And they have the exact same free fedex saver, 800 number, return policy.

Well, i happen to know a little about this i guess.

ABSPC was the original parent company before NewEgg existed. ABS has been around well over a decade and some change, the guys that run it are incredibly smart. ABS was behind both NuTrend and Newegg, although NuTrend has now been merged back into ABS. ABS isnt quite a disty, but they have such large purchase power because of NewEgg they pretty much act like one (distibutors tend to sell to other merchants, drop ship, things like that; ABS/NE now sell almost soley to consumers).

NewEgg is sometimes more expensive these days because they have two warehouses now, CA and NJ. You pay the instate taxes if youre in either of those obviously.

Hope that helps,

Kristopher

The same as TigerDirect has both an american and canadian branch.

Yep my neighbor used to work for newegg. They are the child company of ABS Computers.
Amazing how they got so big so fast.
Started in 2001, and now they are the biggest computer part retailer in the world.
My neighbor says they take in over 10,000 orders a day!
