Newegg to ship all HDDs in new shock-resistant packaging

They've packaged drives well in the past but, it seemed to be a more a matter of which shipping center it came from. I've always had good luck with Calif. but, Texas has been very inconsistent.

Hmm, I hope it really is standard now.
Before, it would depend on which warehouse, and who was packing it.
Some was good, other times, it was pathetic.

Now, what they need to do is flush all the old reviews, for all HDs, and start fresh. Then we can get a sample on DOAs and bad HDs because of package issues...

My 4TB Seagates that I ordered a bit over a month ago came in the new packaging. They're pretty nice--I'm now reusing that packaging to store my old hard drives.

The packaging I've seen before was so incredibly terrible, I could hardly believe it. I'm going to wait a while and see how things turn out with other people before I order any more hard drives from them.

What does the new packaging look like? Can it hold up to the sort of abusive toss over the fence delivery viral videos?

Watch the video in OP's link and you will see it.

I did obviously but there was only 2 secs where they showed some big plastic tube bubble thingy that was the only thing in the box. It didn't look more shock resistant compared to the old hard form+peanuts.

It's like a box or sleeve made of air pillows. It has a "lid" that you can open to get the drive out. And no, the kind of abuse depicted in the video is a gross exaggeration (I think pumping it full of bullets is out of the question. ;)) Don't play baseball or football with it.

The pockets of air have pretty good pressure and feel very firm to the touch. The "lid" is reasonably secure when closed--doesn't feel like it would open up during shipping, but if you do something extreme like play baseball with it, I guess it could come open and let the drive fall out. :p

if has a force field of AIR!

does that mean when i order more then 5 now, 1 WONT be DOA?
I think you guys are missing the point in why newegg is doing this.
Do you know HOW MANY DOA's i got whenever i ordered more then 5 drives from them?
(although they were fast at cross shipping a replacement...)

Always... Always... 1 would fail... it got so bad that i just got tired of ordering more then 5 drives from them at once.

Absolute worst HD packaging I've ever experienced was from Amazon. 4TB WD Enterprise drive in an anti static bag inside a 16x12x8 box with zero packing. I didn't even bother to test it, just sent it back for a refund. I will never buy a HD from Amazon again.

Interesting, mine came in a drive carrier thing in a box so large I wondered if I had ordered 10-15 drive by mistake rather than the 5 I ordered.

Oh, and it's a pretty snug fit, too.

In my somewhat limited experience, Newegg has been pretty good in the past about packaging. The worst I've seen from them are drives packed in small cases with plastic spacers to prevent the drive from coming in contact with the sides, which isn't that bad. As for the best packaging that I've seen from them, I've gotten drives swaddled in layers of bubble wrap multiple inches thick. Maybe I've just been lucky with my Newegg drive orders, but I haven't had a DOA yet.

You should've sent a nastygram to jeff@amazon.com. According to this, Bezos actually pays attention to customer complaints sent to him at his public address.

I can't remember from where, but when I built my system 4 years ago they sent my hard drives in that packaging.

That is nice. I have not ordered many drives from newegg because of what I had read about the shipping.

The one time I did order drives from them they where rapped in bubble rap along with some other parts so they where not loose in the box.

Might give them a try with the next order to see. Now if only 4TB drives will drop to $100 i'll be happy :)

ZipZoomFly had a styrotech type white anti-static foam drive enclosure that they would use, and was the best thing I saw protecting a HD.

Too bad ZZF went belly up.

So, it's only taken like 10 years for Newegg to up their standard on packaging for OEM hard drives?

Obligatory pic of a HDD I got from Amazon.

I ordered a single drive and got shipped 5.

I called em up to get them shipped back, and the person hung up on me. (or the call got DCed.) had to use the web form to contact customer service.

I can't imagine that packaging being as good as the 1.5" layer of large cell bubble wrap used by a now gone internet dealer that specialized in hard drives, and manufacturers would reject warranty claims for drives shipped to them in that packaging.

I think HDs should be foam packed like how network routers and switches are packed.
