Newegg stole $29.99 from me! (Perhaps, going to wait a week)

VirtualLarry

No Lifer
I placed an order on the 12th, for a Sparkle 8400GS for $29.99. A few minutes later, I cancelled the order, because I decided that I wanted to purchase a 4350 for $34.99, with a $10 rebate, instead. This is the first time that I've ever cancelled an order with Newegg.

When I went to their web site, I checked the status of my order, and it said that my card had not yet been charged. So I figured I was good to go cancelling my order. I selected to cancel my order on their web site, and it said that I would recieve an e-mail confiming if they were able to cancel it.

About 10 minutes later, I checked my e-mail, and I had gotten two emails. One telling me that the order was cancelled, and another, tell me my card had been charged. Uh-oh.

So I checked my CC web site, and indeed, it showed a charge, so I figured I would have to wait for up to 7 days for it to drop off.

Only, it never dropped off.

Today, it shows ANOTHER transaction, labelled "RETURN", with a seperate transaction id, for the same amount.

This is a BIG problem. This is a prepaid VISA debit card, aka prepaid CC. But with prepaid cards, they do not accept any money added back on to them!!! So the original debit still stands, newegg took my money, but then the "return" transaction, didn't add any amount to my balance, because you cannot add to these types of CCs.

Newegg screwed up bigtime by not just reversing the original charge, which they could have done. In that case, the money IS returned to the card. But they cannot do it in a seperate transaction, which appears to be what they've done.

So I'm out $29.99, and have no product to speak of here. WTF!

Edit: My apologies to Newegg. It appears that I was confused about how the credit card would be refunded. I assumed that the original charge should have been reversed. For whatever reason, it wasn't. The amount of the "return" transaction finally showed up in my account, some two days after the charge posted. Damn Visa.

I'm sure they'll give you store credit or something.

Maybe you just shouldn't cancel orders placed with pre-paid cards.

I guess I didn't realize that Newegg was so incompetent that they didn't know how to reverse a charge on a CC. Nor did I realize that they were so incompetent that they didn't know how to differentiate between a normal CC and a prepaid one. (Target B&M POS systems can, they give me the balance remaining on my cards when I use one there.)

Sounds like its more your fault than theirs, but I'm sure newegg will take care of it for you anyway. Maybe you should call/email them rather than complain on a forum.

How is it their job to keep track of you using a pre-paid CC?

Instead of whining about it on here, how about you call them? Their customer service is top notch.

So knowing this.. and presumably knowing Newegg will charge your CC within minutes (being a tech company and having been a previous customer) you canceled the order and expected anything different?

Fault : Yours

Sounds like you are confusing a void transaction with a refund. They can void the original transaction so long as it has not settled. This doesn't generate a new transaction id. If it's already settled, they have to issue a refund, which does generate a new transaction id. Prepaid CC or not doesn't matter. They will accept a refund and it's totally normal for there to be a different transaction id for it. It's likely still a pending refund on your account that hasn't settled yet, so can take a few days to be added back to your available balance.

The more indignant the title, the more fail found within...

They haven't stolen anything from you. If you talk to their, I'm sure you will be able to get your money back in some fashion.

EDIT: Oh and VISA disagrees with you. http://usa.visa.com/personal/cards/prepaid/reloadable_prepaid_card_faq.html
Returning purchases - Store return policies may vary. You may receive a credit to your card, a cash refund or even a store credit, depending on the particular store. A credit to your account may take up to one week to process before it's available for use.

EDIT2: This just keeps getting better. OP, if you hate Newegg so much, why do you keep shopping there?
Add two "Free Shipping" items to cart at Newegg... and have to pay shipping!
new web site, NewEggBusiness! / Newegg now sucks again
Newegg now blocks access to "deactivated" items!
NewEgg no longer displays shipping charges?!?
Newegg.com's new layout
Newegg intentionally obscuring memory timing and voltage info from pics!
Newegg shortens "Standard Return Policy" from one year to only 30 days!

I got bored, but there are more.

All they had to do is the obvious thing - reverse the charge. Or better yet, since they hadn't charged my card yet, and they recieved my cancellation request - why charge the card at all?

It's already been explained to you in this thread that they DID reverse the charge. It shows up as a credit and will show up in your account within a few days.

Whether or not you can read is unknown at this time.

Your fail thread's fail threshold is high.

Its called automation. Your card had probably already been charged, it just took a few minutes for it to show up.

That would be wierd, since the "return" charge shows a transaction date and a posted date, and I thought that once a charge posted, then it was done. I'll wait a few days yet for the balance to be added, but I'm not very hopeful.

No, they didn't reverse it. I've had charges reversed (something I ordered, got sent back instead of delivered, they showed a reversed charge, and then they charged my card again when I tracked it down and confirmed that I wanted the order).

It looks different when a charge is reversed. I know what it looks like. The reversed transaction replaces the original transaction in my transaction log for my CC. This time, there was a seperate transaction.

Hey, the squeaky wheel gets the grease! I like newegg, I like shopping there, but sometimes a little constructive criticism is needed to keep them on the right path.

Sorry, I remember that you bought a bunch of stuff because of your "I have too much stuff thread" and couldn't resist.

You can always call the customer service line for the card and ask when the funds will be available. They should be able to let you know.
