Newegg shortages on new cards

We've all watched the 6800 series supplies drying up. Now, the same appears to be happening with the 580!

HD-6870 = 6 out of 10 out of stock with inflated prices ($260 - $300) on those in stock.

HD-6850 = 3 out of 11 out of stock with inflated, but not as bad, prices ($190 - $210) on those in stock. Overall not as bad as the others, or as bad as it has been.

GTX-580 = 9 out of 11 out of stock with inflated prices ($530 - $560) on the 2 that are available.

Does this lend any credence to component shortages from suppliers, like TI DrMOS, or do you think that yields are suffering? Might explain why the supply of HD-6850 seems to be better than the others, as it's a harvested chip.

I dont think for nvidia its a matter of lack of a compotent like TI DrMOS... maybe they are just selling them faster than they can make them?

This.

Initial production of new components is ALWAYS slower than it will eventually be. Pair that with the fact that the egg is arguably the most popular place for computer hardware and some people NEED to have cutting edge, initial stock for new product goes very quickly.

I think it's just getting dangerously close to Christmas. Doesn't this happen every year?

This and the fact the gtx 580 got high praise in most reviews. I would say they are selling them like proverbial hotcakes 🙂

The closer to Christmas the more crazy it gets. In years past even with prices pushing 300+ dollars, you could not get a PS3 or xbox 360 online, the first two years after launch. Near Christmas.
Thats with MANY etailers carrying them, Walmart, target, gamestop, sears, buy.com ,amazon etc.

Wish there were some initial numbers on sales of the 580. I just got mine ordered at Best Buy.com.

Its the PNY for 499. The only reason I got it there though was because my 5870 fan died yesterday while playing AVP on my 30 inch dell..

After talking to XFX about sending it in they did tell me it would be a reference design...I then called best buy and they said they would give me a store credit for the amount I payed..msrp at launch...so I went in and they gave me a gift card for 404 bucks and I ordered the gtx580...they did tell me when it comes in I can come back and they will apply the 10 percent off coupon so ultimately 500 - 10 percent makes me a happy boy..

While I was there I asked them if they would honor the BGF warranty if any of my bfg cards that I bought there went down and they said YES as long as I bought them there....

If you look at the Best buy website they have the 580 at 499and a 6870 visiontek for 249...not bad prices....sure if you look at cards that have been on their site for a while the prices seem bad like the 299 gtx 460 pny.....if you look at the new arrivals the pny gtx 460 is 200....

Not to mention the Wii....

I'm assuming its a combination of the 68xx series' good performance, release hype, and that we're getting into the Christmas season. The price points on these cards are getting a little silly, but they're still flying off the shelves.

not surprising, it's the holidays. the sales are skyrocketing.

This is why you want to have product out on the shelves for the holidays, people are looking to spend money. If AMD doesn't have the 69XX cards out soon enough it will mean lost sales. What's out there now i being eaten up. Heck I wish I would have ordered my 6870 the night they came out, because by the time I made up my mind the card went up $20. Same with the 58xx series, supply was not up to the demand.

See, why is the supply not up to the demand? This happened when the 5800's were released, as someone said. We know that they were supply limited because of TSMC's 40nm process having issues. The 5770, for instance has never had a supply problem. At least I don't recall one. Surely, they sold more of those than the 5800 cards? Surely, they sold more than the 580 is selling now?

There's 42 models of gtx-460 on Newegg, they're cutting the guts out of them price wise, and only 3 models are out of stock. Are they not selling? A lot of people here think they're the best thing since sliced bread. They've got to be selling a lot of them at the prices they're being offered at. No apparent shortage though.

While it's definitely supply vs. demand that's causing this, my question is what's wrong with the supplies?
