Newegg sent me an X800 pro, and I didn't order it

I sent it back, because I didn't want to get billed or anything.

But then a friend at work said I could have legally kept it without having to pay for it.

Is this true?😕

Well if they didn't have your credit card infromation you probably wont be billed for it, but i think it was the right thing to do.

^^ Ditto

If you kept it, someone else would've been burned for it and oh yah -- karma.

Probably best to just send it back. But you could have called and asked them, I suppose.

Maybe it was a Xmas present from them?

They could get it back as long as they paid all the shipping costs and any inconvenience to you. A lot of companies send fedex to your door in cases like this to avoid causing you any real hassle.

You might have got away with keeping it, and you wouldn't likely get in trouble for not speaking up, but as long as their records showed they sent it to you, they could likely get it back.

 to you for honesty.

If they sent it via US Mail, you could have legally kept it. If sent from another carrier, they could have sued you for its return.

Ethics aside, would there be any legal repercussions had the card not been sent back?

It depends on the company, I suppose. Bailey's sent us a case of firestarter we didn't order once...we just left it alone for a few months. They never called, so free firestarter for us! 😀

Yes, if you get something in the mail you didn't order, you can legally consider it a "gift" and keep it without payment.

That said, I think you did the right thing.

Unless you live on a military base, Newegg sends FedEx.

Same thing happened to a friend of mine, also from Newegg. An Enermax PSU showed up at his house .. it was a quality unit, but he didn't ORDER IT !! Turns out it was addressed to a guy with the same name as his who lived in a town a few hours away but in the same state. He did receive a notice from Newegg that they would be picking it up via Fed Ex later that week.

My friend got some gold-plated RAM the other day from Fry's. I'm not sure but I think it was 1 gig. Oh yeah, all he paid was 30 bucks. The person working in the back cage, rather than getting him the card he wanted for his camera, gave him the RAM. He got to his friends house and didn't bother looking in the bag cuz he didn't need it til he got home I guess.

His dad called him and said Fry's called asking for their RAM back.

radiohead-karma police....song poped up in my head when i read this. Hey thanks for being a good man. We need more of em'

wow, Fry's really called asking for their ram back? Surprising that they wouldn't just eat the loss

edit: and another thing... wtf are those reciept checkers for then.

I don't believe in karma, I'd have kept it. Granted, on a large scale "reaping what you sow" could be considered to be a true concept, but I'm just one person, and don't plan on procreating.

Newegg just called me...they wanted me to tell you to don't send the x800 back to them because it would delay it more, and just send it over to me. PM me for my address and details.
