Newegg: see price in cart

So I was thinking Fallout 4 was a good reason to finally update my GTX660 to a GTX960. I went to Newegg, where I have bought a ton of stuff over the years, searched, and literally the entire page of results had "See price in cart." Like I am going to add each of these cards to my cart to see what they cost? Who could possibly think this was a good idea?

Went to Amazon, searched for the same card, prices listed for all offerings. Way to shoot yourself in the head, Newegg.
 
I agree. It's annoying, and if you confront Newegg about it they will blame the manufacturers for this when in reality it's just a datamining technique.

It looks like the actual price is in the HTML, in a hidden <input> named "priceBefore". I'm thinking about writing a Greasemonkey script to show those. :hmm:

It's possible that name means "before being modified by cart rules," too 🙂. And anyway, why make your customers jump through hoops like this? Maybe it has something to do with trying to build an Amazon-like market of associate sellers. Big effing mistake, imo.

Edit: looked at the WSJ link. So they're saying this is a way to hide their prices from scrapers like NetEnforcers? This is an issue between them and their suppliers, and I really don't care what problems they have with each other, but I will note that I was logged in to an account that has been doing business with Newegg since 2005.

You don't have to "add it" to your cart,
You just click on the link and it pops up.

Regardless, it's annoying and stupid as hell.

I did email them. We'll see what they say. I don't buy it being the manufacturers. What would the benefit be? Literally, people search, and then they buy. How could Newegg's own internal conversion metrics not show this to be a horrible idea? There's no way in hell this isn't impacting the top line.

I posted this here mostly to rant, but I also know they read the forums here. So get your shit together, Newegg. You used to be the go-to source for geek hardware and cool products. As it is now I won't even bother with the site unless I hear that this stupidity is done with.

Manufacturers often have contract requirements with stores that there is a price floor, that coupons don't apply, that there are no advertised price discounts, etc. Just look at the bottom text of a coupon for examples. See here:

"The offer excludes the following: Alessi, Arthur Court,..." There are dozens of brands that have forbidden lower prices to be advertised on that very coupon.

Why? Advertising 20% off would break their contract with those brands. But, 99.999% of the time if you go into that store and buy one of those brands, you can use that coupon with no problem. The contracts don't actually forbid lower prices, just they forbid easily showing customers lower prices.

The price in cart gets around those manufacturer contracts. They never advertise a lower price. But they have to show you the price when you actually buy it. So, adding it to the cart satisfies both requirements.

Newegg isn't alone with this. All stores have to do something similar or have to sell it to you at a higher price than what they want to sell it at.
 
i stopped going to newegg long ago. it was when they added the "rush fee" so that they would "maybe" get your order out that day for an additional fee. considering other places didn't have a problem shipping my stuff out that same day as ordering, i thought that was ridiculous, especially when not paying for it, they would sit on your order for 2-3 day sometimes.

that was probably almost 10 years ago at this point. they lost my business long ago and now with amazon being almost perfect in every way, i have absolutely no reason to go to newegg. i'd probably pay a little more to get it from amazon too because of the convenience and how great their customer service is.

Pfft you Pleb, us preferred members got that for free with every order 😀.

They just recently took that away and are offering their own store credit card now a days. I'll pass just on the fact that I have too many cards and don't need to open another one.

My last purchase was my GTX980SC using my preferred account, guess my next purchase will be from Amazon using my Amazon card.

The only thing that matters is: if Amazon doesn't have to do it then you're screwed. Like I said above, I don't really care what Newegg's relationship with its suppliers is. If I search and get a page of results that don't show the price of a single item we're done. So if no sales is the manufacturer's goal, or selling only through Amazon is their goal, then they win I guess.

I didn't see it when I searched for the same product, but I think it was more the entire page being hidden that bothered me. I don't mind if there are one or two special items and the prices aren't shown, but in general I am searching specifically in order to see the prices. How can it not be bad to hide them?
 
I noticed a lot of places, even Amazon, do this now. What the hell is the point of that? It's more hassle to the customer, and all those extra clicks and page loads also translate to more of their bandwidth being used. Just show me the freaking price!

Actually would be an interesting product to make a bot that does it and then generates a list of all the prices. I feel like doing that just as a big F U to those sites. I would put ads on my site that has the links to the products and simply link to the product's page on said site. Guessing that's probably illegal though.

True, most people including myself have ad blockers now days, so probably would not do much to put ads on it.

I actually forget that I have ads on my sites because I always have the blocker turned on. 😀 Still generates a few bucks from people who come from a fresh install and forgot to install an ad blocker though.

Newegg has a specific time listed on their website for Rush Order Processing. If you order before 12 PM PST, they will try to ship it that day. If they fail to do so, your fee is refunded. To note, I've never had them fail when I've ordered prior to their deadline.

Also, I disagree that Newegg sits on orders. In fact, I'd say that if anyone sits on orders, it would be Amazon. For example, I live close enough that most stuff gets shipped to me from a state away (for both Newegg and Amazon). If I order an item on Monday morning, I'll get it from Newegg on Tuesday and Amazon on Wednesday. Why? Because Newegg shipped it that day, but Amazon stated "Wednesday with two-day delivery" and they will literally wait until Tuesday to ship the package. To me, it seems like Amazon tries to be efficient in taking their delivery promises into account, but that's also an excuse to give something a lower priority.

Isn't Newegg's new card just like their Preferred Account? I mean... the Preferred Account is technically a card just like Amazon's Store Account, but it's limited to use at that specific store.

To be fair, he's probably looking to compare prices on items. If that's the case, not being able to scroll through or sort by price because of the "Add to cart to see the price" is a bit of a pain.
 
Yea, that "price shown in cart" thing pisses me off too...but, like the WSJ article shows, it's the manufacturers who push the resellers to do this shit. It's not like Amazon or Newegg WANT to make your purchases more difficult...and when they do this, they often do give you a better price than the manufacturer agreement technically allows...(but not always...sometimes it's just a ploy to MAKE YOU THINK YOU'RE GETTING A BETTER DEAL.)
 
Sounds like you haven't shopped on Newegg in a very long time. When is the last time you bought a computer component - 2008, 2009?

I never found that to be a hindrance. But I suppose it might be if you wanted to
compare the prices of a couple dozen items.
