Yes but the 5000aaks and lower models do not have perpendicular recording as the 7500aaks has; which results in poorer performance. There is a significant difference between the 500aaks and 7500aaks from what I have read

For me, these are storage drives. Performance means very little.

I have the opportunity to get the Enterprise RAID Edition drive (RE2 WD500YS) for about $10 more than the one Newegg is advertising.
Is that a waste of $10?

According to this Wikipedia entry perpendicular recording increases storage density. It didn't mention performance enhancement, though I suppose it could be a side effect.

Perp. recording is absolutely a performance enhancement with the way it is implemented. Drive manufacturers use it specifically to increase data density per platter and that results in faster read/write speeds at similar rotational speeds.

The 1TB drive is amazing, from what I read.
