[Newegg] Sapphire Tri-X R9 290x 4GB for $260 after rebate

I'm still confused about how an aftermarket, well-cooled 290X like this compares with the current 390 and 390X using the latest driver? Is there still a notable difference in performance between the 290X and 390X for example, even using the latest drivers, but when the 290X has nice cooling like this?

For $20 more you can buy XFX R9 290x Black Edition with Lifetime Warranty or for $240 XFX 290 Black edition and flash it for 290x Bios and unlock all Cores, I did and will try to re-flash, lot of people did.

...and neither of those have this card's amazing cooler so...?

I used a non X DD for mining 24/7 back in the day. The cooler is pretty good an quiet even cranked up to 80% or so if needed. VRM cooling is it's only weakness really. Temp would hover around 100c depending on ambient temp of room.

Had a TriX at same time as the DD. Card is fugly compared to DD. Cooler is superior to DD as far as VRM temps go.

Custom fan curve on DD helps keep VRM temps tolerable. Core cooling is good. Stock profile is pretty much silent.

FYI- This is the newer revision Tri-X model that runs hotter and has a more aggressive fan profile. This one has a non reference PCB unlike the others.

In case anyone was wondering about the differences:

Sold out Was seriously considering jumping on this. Oh well 🙂 No hurry I guess.

That sucks. You gotta hurry when you see deals on 290 or 290x though, as they're getting harder and harder to find for good prices after the official release of the 300 series.

Yea, I actually had it in my cart yesterday - but I needed to find out if it would fit my case and PS then got distracted. Forgot about it until this morning.

how is that a problem?

Yes,that's Wright, and don't forget after 2 years all this cards are gone w/o warranty where XFX is offering actually FREE UPGRADE with Lifetime Warranty. I have 6 year old XFX HD5850 and still does the job, hoping it to last until Furry arrival to get Free Replacement or even better 😁 .

P.S. By the way my R9 290 Black Edition is quiet as a mouse 35c idle under 40c under heavy load all spect max. First time I saw FarCry4 got actual Fog in game 😁, I got 7 fans in case with adjustable speed, CM Sniper baby 😁.

those case fans you have there literally move the fog OUT of the case, thereby moving it OUT of the game world. Farcry4 is demanding game though, so you should probably add two more case fans to help with the extra fog :colbert:
