Newegg: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB - $49.99

Have you tested this promo code? A friend is trying to order some drives for me, and he says that it's not accepting the promo code.

Edit: Nevermind. Friend said he had Hitachi drives in cart then. :facepalm;

Pretty much the top in performance when it comes to spindle drives. Mine Peaks at 150mb/s which is very fast for the old style hd's. 🙂

I picked one up for the same price last time they had this deal. Wonder if I should get another for RAID 0 or get an SSD instead...

^^^ depends on your needs. If you need the storage space; go with another drive. If you want to get more performance out of your OS; go with an ssd. This deal will keep coming around, but then ssd's should continue to drop in price a little and there are always deals on those as well. Its just a never ending battle. If you have the money; get both.

WOuld this be good or fast enough for an HTPC...say...to play Bluray back-ups?

This drive is nearly the speed of the fastest desktop drive ever made (WD Caviar Black). If it can't, then you're doing something wrong. :hmm:

The Spinpoint F3 is faster than the Caviar Black. Just sayin'

And yes, it should be fine for an HTPC. It's quieter during access than the Caviar Black, too, which helps.

These drives have demonstrated great reliability in the ~2 years they've been in the market.

It also uses quite a bit less power; which was one of the reason I chose this drive over the c. black (though the black appears more reliable).

Dang... buy this and one of their 450GB Raptors they have on sale for $130 until Midnight tonight and you'd have a really nice set up storage wise.

Edit: Ordered two

I haven't been able to pick the Velociraptor yet. Half the storage more than twice the price - but the performance improvements are debatable.

They were exciting drives before SSD, more storage, quieter, but there are mixed reports how noticable the performance is versus the Samsung F3.

The 'SATA 3' performance seems to only pay off in RAID setups, leaving the 10K RPM.

When I get tempted, the SSD seems more appealing.

Is this drive much faster than the 2TB F4?

Not sure how well it stacks up against the F4 model. The F3 is very popular with the budget to medium priced builds and it was out long before the F4. I'll let someone with F4 knowledge answer to its performance. Cant say I have ever read or heard of its performance or quality. I've never used anything larger than 1TB myself.

That depends on what you mean. As a boot drive? Yes. It has much lower access times, and the higher sequential read/write speeds help too if you keep media on the boot drive. For storage? Not too much. Sequential, the F3 1TB gets around 125MB/s average read and 105MB/s write while the F4 2TB gets around 105MB/s read, 90MB/s write.

Thanks Axel. I have a M4 128gb SSD for OS. I want to rip my BluRay collection to a raid setup for streaming. I would be fine with the two 2TB, F4's in Raid 0 for that? Or would the F3's perform better.
