newegg refurbs

thinking about buying an athlon64 motherboard from the egg. i've never bought a refurb from anywhere so i'm sightly confused about it.

i realize it's oem and will be the mobo in a box and that's all. what exactly are refurbs? are they reconditioned parts? returned parts due to people changing their minds? or is it taking a chance of getting a board with teh ps2 connectors not working or something small like a usb port not working?

please inform me and if anyone has bought a refurb from newegg, how was your experience?

i just want the motherboard by itself but am scared of getting one that working or something small not working on it.

Normally these things are not worth repairing, so it's something returned or whatever. If savings are 20%+ I'd go refurb. Refurb is a nice word for used.

unless things have changed, newegg refurbs usually mean untested returns. Neweggs refurbed mobo's have been their business' weakest link imo.

It's a crapshoot. Usually someone bought the wrong thing & opened the box
before they found out it was the wrong thing they had ordered.

Lots of PCI-X video cards going back when people thought they would go in an AGP slot but found out that they don't.

Some motherboards really are dead, but some are just pinned wrong on the CMOS,
so moving the jumper fixes the 'Alleged' problem - I've had that happen to me twice.

0/1 on refurbs for me, bought a i865 MSI motherboard. MSI never again.

edit: i base this off of not only my experience (its a refurb anyway) but others' experiences as well. though i have heard they are getting better.

2/3 of the refurbed items I've bought from them were fine, but the other 1/3 were clearly defective.

I was thinking about buying a Leadtek 6600GT from them yesterday for $154, but fought off the urge.

I got my AIW 9800 Pro as a refurb... had to send the first one back, but the second one worked like a champ.
For the record, I've owned two MSI mobos, and the first one didn't start having problems until it was 5 years old (then 1 IDE channel started going bad).

Newegg.com does not test any product, including refurbished items. Refurbished components are therefore only tested by the original manufacturer.
Due to the varying quality of manufacturer testing, YOU ARE TAKING A RISK BUYING REFURBISHED PRODUCTS. Refurbished items are OPEN BOX products that contain components that have previously been owned by other clients and returned to Newegg.com. These products are sold considerably under cost.

I think that by definition, a refurbished product must be 100% functional, since it is "made new". You dont have to worry about broken ports, slots, etc. I'm not saying that it dosent happen, but you can send it back if thats the case, so dont buy it if you know you need it ASAP.

I have myself purchased a few refurbs from newegg, and I highly recomend them. This KT600 board I'm writing this on is refurbished, but it came with ever component (most still sealed) and it works fine. One of my roomates has also purchased a mobo referb from newegg with no problems, his was missing the faceplate.
