Not bad speakers, esp. for the price. Got a pair out in our boarding kennel and the dogs love 'em!

CROSS them at 80hz to a 10 inch sub and you have a very good 2.1 setup. I build a lot of speakers for 50 bucks these are very good price.

Anyone know how to compare to the slightly larger SP-BS41L-R speakers?

Almost exactly what i did. For the price these are a steal. Alternatively, one could use them as satellite speakers.

Why use the 80 Hz crossover frequency? Is that to give you some margin at the low end before you hit the low end of their specified range of 65 Hz? Better to cut the low end off early to avoid pushing the limit? Or is it more of taking advantage of the subwoofer that is "just better" at frequencies up to 80 Hz, so may as well relieve that burden from these speakers?

I too am considering these, just wanted some clarification.

best to have some overlap between the sub and bookshelves, it helps the sound blend better between the two. also, 65hz is the -3db point of these speakers, so right around 80hz may well be where their response starts falling off.

it will also give your amp (less important here) and the drivers/magnets in these speakers a bit more headroom.

Speakers are not like i5-2500k chips for oc. (5Ghz as the holy grail of oc)

It is better for sound quality to not approach the sound rating, in this case the speakers are -3db at 65hz . That means they have started a bit of rolloff.

So at 80hz they would be clearer or less muddy. I picked 80hz for that reason.

I picked a 10 inch sub as any 10 inch sub should play very musically to 80-100hz . A good 2.1 system for a computer can have these left and right of the screen with the ten inch sub at your feet forming a triangle of sound. This tends to make you brain think most of the bass is at the speaker level not under the desk at your feet. Also the 80hz cutoff works better then 100 or 120 or 140 it helps your mind hear the sound at the desk level and ignore the sub at your feet.

I wonder if these and a small sub / receiver would be astronomically better than my Z560 setup, which is starting to get worn out...rear channels cutting in and out.

yes this amp

with a decent sub

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=310-2020

would be decent but would need you to build a box. or install in wall

Is it possible to plug these into my old z5300 subwoofer somehow?

no for the short answer. long answer is yes but you would need to attach it to an amp like the one above and disconnect its electronics . then find the wires that directly power the cone and wire them to the new amp's sub section.
