'Open Box' selection on New EGG has some nice new stock tonight

...particularly the ASUS ROG 5870 for $377, MSI GTX 470 $235

Id worry that somebody tried overclocking it and overvolting it too far, possibly damaging the card. They might also have messed up installing a custom cooling system then put back the stock cooling.

on 400$ cards hell even 200$ cards id spend the extra 40 bux get it new with double lifetime warranty. If it was killer half off deal i might be tempted but just hope you get lucky and if it is defective return it in time. I recently bought 8600gt that lasted about 3 months before the caps exploded. Xfx wants invoice to warranty it and i dont have one but its only 3 months old. UGH

do you still get manufact warranty?
Depends. Asus, for instance, makes you register the serial number and then you have 3 years from date of manufacture.
So if the person who sent the card back did not register it, then you can do that and you'll be fine. YMMV on other manufacturers but many of them are not transferable once registered.

Got a 5870 from newegg open box. Dvi ports didn't work. Through hdmi it worked fine. Returned the card and got a refund. They won't give you the money back you pay for shipping the card to your house. They pay return shipping though. Not enough of a discount for the hassle IMO. I think they are returns from customers. You might get lucky and get a good card but I don't have time to test cards for newegg for a $30 discount.

yes, you could get an msi gtx 470 for $239.99 shipped at newegg a couple of days ago. I'd rather hassle with an MIR than risk getting somebody else's problem. the 470 needs to be about $200 imho to be worth consideration.

I have not had any problems with the products in the few instances where I bought into newegg's openbox merchandises; in both instances the products were complete even though they made no assurance they would be.

I bought an open-box X800 card and it turned out to be defective, so I had to return that one and buy a new one. That's about my only experience with Newegg open-box as far as video cards go.

On the other hand, I've purchased two or three open-box motherboards, and not had a problem with them, although one of them went to a friend after rudimentary testing, and he reported that the northbridge was burning hot, and had to add a fan.
