So I build a comptuer for my friend...he ordered everything from the Egg and I assembled it...it was working great till the PSU died yesterday (its very on and off....bad times) Anyways....he NEEDS the computer for college in a week....and he called newegg to get a new PSU but they said he has to ship the whole case back...and they wont send out the new one till they get the old one...theres NO way he will get it in time. What can be done about this? Isint there a way for the Egg to take ur CC number and ship out the new one and charge you if they dont get the old one?? What can he do?

Did the power supply come packaged with the case? I mean was it something like an Antec where the case and power supply are bundled at the factory? If so, you're out of luck. I'd contact the manufacturer and work something out with them.

Better yet, if it's a cheap case/power supply, ditch the power supply and write off the expense and buy a decent brand-name one. He'll be better of in the long run with a solid power supply and you will too. Since you're building it for him, you're the one he's going to call when he has problems.

Edit: Woops! Aspire, nuff said. Tell him to invest $50 in a decent name brand power supply. Antec, Enermax, are two that come to mind.

only problem is...that case is TINY. You need an extra small PSU...and those are few and far between.

Since it came with the case, they need both in order to return it to the manufacturer. The only thing you can do is buy another psu and eat the cost, or buy another case/cpu right now while rma'ing the old one for a refund. Drawback - shipping cost for new case/psu, as well as 15% restocking charge.

buy a new PSU now. I can testify that Aspire PSU's are nothing but trouble. Have him buy a new one and move on with both of your lives.

Here's another vote for locating a good replacement PSU. Chalk the bad one up as a loss. That, or try and sell it as non-functional. Who knows, might get a couple bucks out of it.

I have returned numerous Enlight PSU's by themselves that were bought as a package with a case to newegg. They don't cross ship though. If they want the whole thing back the only way you're going to get it sooner than later is to buy another and return the old one. Unless you can find a replacement local.

You could just take a spare PSU and keep it outside of the case for that week. It might not be pretty, but it'd work.

Well, if you have to return the whole case to get the power supply replaced, take everything out of the case and set it up on a desk or something with no case, pick up a new PSU and hook that up, then send the case and PSU back.

When you get it returned, then you're good to go.

If you want to see how to set it up outside of the case, search OT for "ghetto computer" or something like that... there was a thread about doing that a couple weeks ago.

You can simply return the PSU you bought when you get the case back... or borrow one off of a friend.

I'm sure some AT'er in your area has one you can borrow for a couple of weeks.... I have 3 sitting around I would let you borrow/buy dirt cheap.

Are you SURE?

CyberpowerSystems sells that same case but with an Enermax or Ultra or whatever you pick.

I mean, I know the stock PSU is small, but that doesn't mean others won't fit.

And don't blame Newegg on wanting the case back. Unlike Crucial's experience, those Aspires aren't sold seperately. So it's not going to be something they can take off the shelf and ship to you out of inventory. Pull one out of another case? Too much inventory liability to do that.

It's a crap PSU. Replace it with a different one if you can.

if the case came with the PSU, you're SOL. next time buy quality components so this doesn't happen. ALl I can say is deassemble it quickly, get the overnight delivery and hope it comes soon enough. Or, just skip the middleman and get a new PSU. The old one can be a momento. I think any computer builder here has at least one fired PSU lying around as a reminder of their earyl days
