So Sunday, July 3rd, I bought an XFX 6800GT for $289 from newegg. They were closed the fourth, and the fifth my order was processed and shipped. Arrived magically on my doorstep the 7th... problem is on Tuesday I discovered I could have gotten a Radeon X800XL, a very comparable card, for $179 through employee accomidations at Circuit City. I read through newegg's policies and discover a 15% restocking fee is required for all returned items - no good, since that is ~$45, plus $10 shipping back to them, so i would only save $50 if i returned it. Just out of chance i e-mailed one of their customer support reps asking them if they could waive the restocking fee because it was an unopened box, i hadn't even recieved the item yet.. he e-mails me back the next day giving me a lecture about the 15% restocking fee.. then waives it anyway and gives me an RMA number.

I hope they are still this way once they go public.

CLIFF NOTES FOR THE LAZY:
-bought a 6800GT from newegg
-fast service and delivery, as normal
-found out i could get a comparable card for ~$100 cheaper
-newegg service rep waived 15% restocking fee for return

That's good. I don't understand why they'd give you a lecture about the restocking fee when it wasn't even opened.

Restocking fee covers all the operations that one of their employee do from taking a piece of hardware from stock, packing it and ship it. Also, it covers the reverse operations.
Why cover the packing/preparation to ship? Because this is normally covered by the profit from the sale. As the sale is non existant, those money must be recovered someway.

Nobody claims they are the absolute cheapest across the board. But most would agree they are the most consistant, speedy, helpful company they buy parts from. I know that's true for me. I'm willing to pay a few percent more than the dirt cheap places to have piece of mind, and know if I have to call for some reason I'll talk to an American speaking english.

Not to mention, occasionally you'll get the scammer that opens the box, takes the card out, and throws in a NIC, then reseals it and sends it back.

He orders a laptop, shipping to an address =/= his billing address, Newegg verifies it (takes a while for reasons that ARE THE FAULT OF THE BUYER (using wierd phone numbers).

Then upgrade it to next day shipping and give him a call when it ships.

As i read that article I think more highly of newegg than I already did . . . . and I loves me my neweggs.

I will not buy parts from anyone else unless the price difference is huge, or newegg doesn't carry what I'm looking for. I've been buying from them fairly frequently for 4 years now and I have never had a single reason to change.

Unfortunately, I fear that things will change for the worse when they go public. They'll be accountable to shareholders first, customers second. Shareholders demand profits. Their skinny little margins won't cut it anymore.

The omni-present problem that corporations have to deal with...

Every business structure has its disadvantages, but this is a big one.
