Newegg - How Often Intel G2 120 GB @ $179?

A week or two ago Newegg had the normally $230 120 GB Intel G2 at $179 after a discount and MIR. I did not act fast enough and lost out. Is Newegg likely to do this again and, if so, how often are they apt to offer these significant discounts?

The last time it was on sale was on Black Friday for around $165 AR. You'll probably have to wait a few months...

Just keep your eye on the Newegg flyers, OP. A few weeks ago, Newegg had a 20% off all SSDs sale and I got my G2 for $187 out the door without having to mess with rebates. I think the only time I've seem them for $179 always involved MIRs, and I'd rather pay a little extra to avoid that.

I could only recall twice in the last several months when it had a price drop. I missed the last one and still got it with just the $30 rebate. Still feel like it was a good deal ... it's installed and running great.

They say that the new Intel "value" SSDs are coming out in April, so you might do well to wait a month, OP. I hear they will offer twice the capacity at the same price as current drives.

I know this was the line everyone was saying late last year, but haven't we seen since that the 25nm chips are likely to not have the capacity/price ratio we were expecting? And potentially with fewer write cycles?

I have an 80 GB G2 now, just need more capacity. The G2 is a tried and proven drive and works very well. The newer generation will have better specifications but I do not perceive these better specs will translate into a dramatic real world difference. In fact, I expect it will be barley noticeable.

Therefore, I made the decision that the G2 is not broken, serves my needs really well, and I am not going to wait for largely unproven drives with different controllers and questionable 25 nm silicon. That is why I am trying to wait for Newegg to significantly discount the 120 GB G2 again.

Saw it. Bought it.

Thanks. I received an email a few hours ago from a friend about the buy.com sale. I never purchased from buy.com previously so I checked them out on resellerratings.com. Their rating is only OK (8.04) but it is not well above 9.0 like Newegg and BHPhoto. However, I did like the fact that they seemed to sincerely respond to problems people reported so I decided to take a chance with them.

It will be nice to have an additional 40 GB (over my existing 80) for more available space and room to put a 16 GB data base that is now on a secondary HDD.

Buy.com is one of the older (and larger) sites out there...I'd imagine most of their poor reseller-ratings scores are from people who got shafted on rebates or received DOA hardware and blamed buy.com even though it wasn't their fault.

I forgot to mention that you can get 4% cashback through Fatwallet and 5% cashback through Shop Discover when buying stuff at Buy.com.

They've also got a solid history of being oversold on popular items - their stock system doesn't keep up, and they sell out far before the online store indicates as much. Then your order kind of goes into this odd limbo for 3-6 weeks where it's 'Sent to Warehouse' and nobody can give you any feedback on the ETA or what is going on, but you can cancel the order!

If you're patient you're pretty much guaranteed to get the deal, though. I just wait it out, but I could see where other people would rage and drop negative reviews.

Well, I placed the order this morning and already I received an email with a FedX tracking number. FedX states they will deliver the drive the day after tomorrow. Not bad performance for both buy.com and FedX considering free shipping. I was also pleased with being to use Amazon to pay for it. That is a great convenience with almost a single click purchase (although Newegg is not much more).

I typically reward business that treat me well with a lot loyalty. That is why I have used Newegg almost exclusively since shortly after they established themselves in business. Buy.com's performance will certainly not cause me to stop using Newegg, they are just consistently too damn reliable, but, I might now start shopping prices using buy.com too.

That is EXACTLY what happened to me , the ONE time I ordered from them. I ordered a memory stick pro duo, for a new psp when they launched, and it was just a avg price. I got it 8 weeks later with never a email or any corespondent about my order.
Never thought of using them again.

Bought, thanks for the heads up. Also FYI, even though the $10 off coupon can only be spent on buy.com merchandise, you can bring your total above $200 using a marketplace seller item, and the $10 will be applied to the SSD. I bought a $6 hard drive enclosure to do so.

It happened to me with an 8800GTS, a G7, and an Icemat Siberia (way back when) headset - exact same sequence every time. I never really minded because the prices were absolutely screaming every time it happened. 😀

Been using Buy.com since my very first video card (a Voodoo 3 3000 AGP 😀), and been pretty happy with them in terms of support.

Although they could not cancel my order to purchase a Crucial C300 instead, they did offer me the chance to refuse shipment or return it with no restocking fee.

Support via the live chat function is great at 2 PM or 2 AM. My only issue is that the website search still sucks.

The super long shipping times are because they use one of those pseudo dual carrier shipping methods for their "free" shipping on anything that isn't heavy. Look up "UPS Mail Innovations" or "FedEx Smartpost." Those shipping times are not guaranteed because they basically hand it off to your regional post office after which it gets treated like parcel post.

If you want it faster, you have to pay for shipping.
