I think I will hold off for now, want something other than the reference cooler....although I am still very tempted. Want to try one out so very bad.
 
I'm glad I can't afford this atm, damn I want one. But I promised myself at the least I'd hold out for a better build quality unit, MSI Lightning/Twin Frozor.

I guess you're paying for the Asus reputation and warranty. Gigabyte's content is similar to Asus.

Yes, Asus reputation is what you are paying for. By the way, the Asus card is already OOS. So, people are willing to pay extra for the name.

The FOB 475 price does suggest that after the usual price gouging during the first month of availability, the price may settle down below $500.

But FOB price does not mean MSRP, and if anyone confuses the two, it's their problem.

To be fair, ASUS does stuff like having back braces that few if any others do, so they really do have higher quality. $40 higher quality? I dunno...

As far as I can see, this is just a straight reference card. I know their 6970 had a back plate. That would effect the cost/price. They also seem to be OOS a lot (even the 6970). Either they don't give Newegg as many cards as other vendors, or they just sell better. Or, they charge more and Newegg doesn't buy as many and passes the cost on to the customer.

A handful of the Asus just came back into stock but now it's gone again. You can see how many cards Newegg has by searching on the neweggbusiness.com - it provides up-to-date stock levels. Dunno why this useful feature isn't deployed on the regular site.

The Gigabyte model is at MRP $549 and it has the same three year warranty as Asus (Sapphire, HIS, Powercolor are two years, XFX is lifetime,). I think Gigabyte is on par with Asus in mobos so maybe in video cards as well.

I believe all the launch HD 6970s had back plates, mine from Sapphire does. If I remember correctly ASUS's 6970 had an aluminum shroud while the rest used plastic.
 
Nice, this right here is a single GPU with more power then a 5970.

Imagine what the 7990 could do.

The price is justified for what it is compared to the products on the market now.

Also, look at the minimum PSU that is required. A 500w is all that is needed, seriously impressive.

On the 22nd of December 2011, AMD launched its Radeon HD 7970, announcing that the cards will be available in the retail channels by 9th January, 2012. It permitted reviewers with access to AMD-made samples to post reviews on the 22nd, and told the press that it will have a FOB (freight-onboard) price (the price at which each card ships out of its place of origin, in this case Hong Kong, China) of US $525. Market sources told DonanimHaber that this price has been adjusted from $525 to $475. That doesn't necessarily mean that retail HD 7970 will cost lower than the $550 target retail price AMD talked about in several occasions. It will be up to downstream distributors and retailers on whether they want to convey this latest cut to the end-user, or keep a bigger "cut" (margin) for themselves. AMD hasn't officially announced any price updates so far.

FOB price is not retail price and is stated in the text.

I don't care... I had a pretty bad experience with ASUS 6970. What a piece of crap that turned out to be. Ditto for their GTX 580 parts. I ordered Sapphire because of the extra accessories and because I had a very good experience with their ATI Radeon 9700 Half Life 2 bundle 🙂. BTW, I'll be picking mine up from their City of Industry location tomorrow (assuming I get the notification).

All the people waiting are going to be sorry. This thing is selling out by EOD tomorrow... if not earlier.
 
For those not checking Newegg Business, Powercolor model only has a few units left at this point. HIS and Sapphire still say "20+" for stock.

EDIT: Powercolor looks to be gone now. And then there were two...

Just placed my order for two. Don't wanna wait and watch prices jump by $60-70 bucks once the initial stock runs out.
