newegg hard drive shipping is horrible.

So I just bought a western digital WD15EADS 1.5TB sata drive from their open box.

Was actually a great deal.. like $95 - live cash + shipping and tax... so about $107 for a drive that normally costs $150ish

That said the shipping was god awful. Like just plain horrible, if I sold something like this on say ebay I might have gotten a negative for it.

The drive came with get this... ONE sheet of bubble wrap sort of wrapped around it. I mean it wasnt even taped down it was just folded over it. And on top of that a big ball of crumpled paper in a box. Thats it. The drive wasnt even in the middle of the paper, it was sitting under it on the bottom of the box.

I am currently running a full drive scan on it (which takes 5 hours and is about 10% through but seeming good so far) and hopefully its ok, but it still makes me somewhat angry seeing as newegg would never refund your shipping cost to you or the cost to ship it back to them if it ended up being dead.

I guess this is the "risk" you take with buying hard drives from newegg now. Worth it for a deal like the one I got, but their normal new hard drives aren't even the cheapest most of the time, so why would anyone buy a new oem drive from them ever.

Are you kidding? Anytime ive ever had a problem that wasnt even their fault, they give me a full refund + $25 credit towards my next purchase.

Sorry, I guess you just had a bad packer. My stuff has always come well packed/protected from NewEgg.

They probably take less care of "used" hardware vs. new hardware. This is why i don't purchase open box.

I guess they have to keep labor costs down somehow to be able to advertise such low prices.

I've never had a problem with their shipping but at least all boxes I've received have been stuffed full. I'm in s.e. u.s. Shipment origin is often tennessee. This might make a difference.

Instead of complaining to ATOT, complain to Newegg with pictures of the sub-standard shipping.

I have no idea how you have pulled this off. I've been shipped defective stuff and the best i've ever been able to do is get the restocking removed which is pretty easy.

But generally they haven't been willing to take shipping back, plus obviously you have to pay to ship.

I've read that some of their stuff isnt so well packed in the comments on some new hard drives but figured people were just exagerrating, but wow.

Mine came from CA to CA, so maybe the tenesee people are not retarded and can actually pack a hard drive.

Could be worse. I got a HD once inside a box about four times its size with only a sheet of paper, the order receipt, for packaging. The drive still works two years later though.

Here is an interesting review from newegg 1tb caviar black:

"Here's a suggestion for anyone buying a hard drive, go with FedEx, the express saver is the cheapest. I know it cost more than UPS and Newegg's "free shipping" isn't FedEx, but here's the deal: I have bought over 30 hard drives (Western Digital and Seagate) through Newegg in the past 2 years, 100% of the ones shipped FedEx are still running, 80% of the ones shipped UPS were either DOA or failed within 6 months. UPS beats the He11 out of their shipments, even their website states that every package is subject to a 6 foot drop. Do the math, free shipping or cheaper UPS shipping isn't free in the long run. I ship my non-fragile items with the free shipping, but I do a separate order and use FedEx for hard drives and Motherboards."

I've always thought they over-protected its stuff, tbh.

I'm sure your drive is fine, people are so overly paranoid about shipping electronics.

i purchased a DVD burner from t hem 2 years ago. it came in a box with no real packaging. and the box was partialy crushed. i contect Newegg and they sent me a new out and i got $20 off the next purchase.

I then got a HD for another computer. it came in a box and the HD was in this plastic holding thing. I ran a quick test and it seemed fine. but since ti was going in a extra computer i was giving away i didnt spent a lot of time testing it heh.

I ordered a hard drive in May from Newegg and found the packaging material sufficient. From what I remember though, there were peanuts in my box.

Not to be "that guy", but this isn't really anything new. I know you guys don't like hardforum, but I know that there have been quite a few threads over there about this where we took pictures and described our hard drives that arrived from newegg. I don't troll the hardware subforums here as often, but I'd find it hard to imagine that they haven't discussed it here as well.

From a few samples, it seems like the problems normally originate from the Whittier/La Puente warehouse, not so much from their Tennessee one and some from their NJ one.

Anyway, you're not the only one. I've gotten hard drives with a single thin sheet of bubble wrap (not the huge ones with like two inch bubbles) in a box filled halfway with peanuts.

Amazon.com shipped me some ceramic bowls in a "ready to ship" box which consisted of the normal package just inside a slightly larger box. The only protection for the bowls was a thin piece of cardboard between each. Needless to say, all the bowls arrived shattered. Ended up ordering some from Bed Bath and Beyond instead, where they actually know how to ship fragile stuff, as it came wrapped tightly in a few layers of bubble wrap and packed in a box so that they wouldn't move around.

I ordered a drive from a different online vendor and it showed up in 12" box with that massive thick foam all around it. That's what I expect.

aren't hard drives rated for hundreds of Gs shock tolerance when the drive is powered down? i imagine bubble wrap is fine for almost every situation a shipping box could go through...

never had a problem with the new ones i've bought from them..even oem which have no retail packaging protection. drives aren't all that delicate when off.

OEM? I had a retail one, so it was in its retail box and put inside their shipping box that was filled with packing peanuts.
