Well, I don't know how much heat the 800 dissipates, but I would guess that you could just get a larger heatsink and put it on, then you might not need a fan. Shouldn't be too much trouble.

Eh, too much trouble for me. I don't really like mucking around with that type of stuff.

Cool thread! I'm in the same boat here... debating between uATX and lots of regular expansion options (1AGP/3PCI is plenty!) or going with mITX and pure, tiny integration! For the kind of stuff I like to do, I don't think the C3 has enough "juice".

The Chyang Fun CF-S668 however, is small and runs a REAL P4 or Athlon (depending on model.) Power AND tiny! You lose expansion though... one LP PCI is it!

Not sure if there are many people here interested in these boards, but I have been wanting one for a long time, and I think I may finally pick one up.

That board is pretty cool. If you put in a decent ATi AIW PCI card, could this thing be used as a TIVO? Nonetheless, I think it would make a great server/firewall in that cubit case to replace my clunky old k6-2 in an AT form factor.

Actually, as neat as that CF case I linked to earlier is, the MicroStar MSI Hermes machine is not only quieter, but for almost the exact same size, gives you 2 full PCI slots insted of one LP. WORLD of difference, and if you're not a gamer, the lack of AGP isn't a big deal.

I'm almost dead-set on the Hermes - but I can't help but think of a microATX solution that can be upgraded down the road.

There are the ever-popular Shuttle cubes and you can upgrade the motherboards to newer models.... just so darn expensive! Almost twice that of the MSI Hermes!

And if a basic machine is all you need, you need the ECS U-Buddie!
It's a prebuilt 1GHz C3, 10GB HDD, 128/256MB, etc.... For less than the price of an empty Shuttle case you have a complete computer including slim CD-ROM!

Take a look at the board, it already has TV out (yellow S-video plug). Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd like to buy one of these and make a nice little Commodore64/Intellivision/Nintendo/SuperNintendo/Sega/TurboGrafx emulation machine to sit right next to my TV (or rather *close* to my TV, I don't really want the pretty colors it would make *too* close to the TV). Now that would be great!!!

I bet you could do it for $300 (just add case/RAM/HD/2xUSB Game controller). The advantages being that it wouldn't take up nearly as much space as all the consoles and cartridges (and you could use "evaluation" ROMs).

I have one of those board, but I am having a hard time to find a case for it. I am looking for a smallest possible case without CD/floppy. All I need is a case w/ a small PSU and a bay for a HD. I like the cube style case, but it is kind of big and it is too expensive for my taste.

I've been thinking of picking up a Mini-ITX board/case, put an extra NIC in there, and make a nice Firewall out of it.
But for now Im pretty happy with my current FW, not entirely quiet, but quiet enough for me :)

Does anyone know of any Mini-ITX mobos that have the same features as the new VIA ones, but without the embedded CPU? I really like the integrated USB/LAN/S-video/Sound/Firewire, but for my purposes I'd probably like to put a more powerful chip on there (Like a Tualatin PIII). I still would want to keep the tiny form factor, though.

Thanks.

The P4 link above is even better with the addition of firewire. And faster processor obviously, though I'd lean towards a fanless C3 with firewire if it was available. Drat.

Anyway, searched for the P4 board, but only came up with importer links. If one of you is an importer and wants to get a crate.....

Awesome stuff on the P4. Seems like there'll be problems getting this unit!

Well, a NW P4 Celeron 2.0 is not only cheap (and MUCH faster than the C3) but probably runs at the same temperature! Only the C3 under 800MHz could run fanless in an enclosed space. That celly2.0 could run with just a slow-moving, silent fan. AND you'd have the better upgrade path.
