I paid 280$ about 7 months ago for my 9800 pro, and I have a chance to sell it now for 199$ If I get 199$ for my 9800 pro, is this a good deal and a good upgrade?

Dont bother the normal 6800 non GT/Ultra isnt that much faster check out reviews.

wetcat007 is right. I was deciding between the 9800 Pro and the 6800 (non-GT) then I read that the 6800 doesn't really offer that much (if any) of a performance increase over the 9800 Pro. In the end, I settled on the 9800 Pro because I felt it offered more bang for the buck.

The 6800 is only 12% faster than the 9800XT. 😛

Wow...if you can find someone to pay more for your 7 month old card than a new one, then do it. And then sell them a bridge in Brooklyn while you're at it.

I wonder what reviews is it talking about, and where you got 12 %.
The anandtechg review shows 6800 to be 40% faster the 9800xt, so at
least 50% faster the 9800 pro in most cases.

Alot of the perfomance depends on what game, but the 6800 does rule the XT most of the time so the pro even more.

Can you OC the 6800 Vanilla with stock cooler?

If so, you can deduct the price of a cooler and FarCry (In Your Mind, if you want them)- say $55, so that puts it $35-40 price diff over OEM 9800Pros. It worths. Even if you are pretty strapped for cash.

Or hold out for the GT. I got the 256MB 9800Pro for $223 the day before, but that's fine. Fine.

I'm building a system for a friend, and I can sell him my 9800 pro (ATI Retail) + an installed VGA Silencer for 179$

I also have some pc3200 I am going to sell him, along with a mouse etc. In then end it will cost me nothing to do the upgrade.

So, if it costs me NOTHING, or at most 10$ or so is it a worthwhile upgrade? or should I just buy my frined a 9800 pro and keep mine?

$179 with a VGA Silencer is more of a fair deal. I was never a proponent of buying $300 video cards, but several farctor play in here.

1. The performance gain IS worth it from a longevity stand point.
2. Are we bumping into some performance caps as far as price and heat are concerned that would keep this new generation of cards at the top for longer than usual? NVidia is already implementing SLI which, to me, indicates that that is where they see the future barring some revolution in chip design.
3. Are consoles going to grab the lion's share of hot new games with developers leaning that direction?

The value of the 9800 Pro will be directly linked to the cost of the 6800. As prices for the 6800 continue to fall, so will the 9800 Pro. Personally, I'd sell immediatly before the 6800 hits wide distribution. I suspect in 6-8 months we'll see the second generation of these new cards come out with some cost cutting features that will bump the 9800 Pro right off the map.

My $0.02:

There's exactly one game that's out right now that can truly demand more than a 9800Pro -- and that's Far Cry. How often do you play Far Cry? At what resolution? How important is it to you to play other current games (Battlefield Vietnam, UT 2004) at 1600X1200, with all the settings maxed out?

This situation will change in a few months when Doom3 and HL2 are out, but by then, there will have been many, many hot deals on video cards. I'd be shocked if 6800GT's weren't available at <$300 in the next two or three months.

Buying computer parts is always a waiting game if you want it to be, but in this case, the new video cards haven't dropped at all, and we know from experience that they will soon. It looks Nvidia and ATI both got reviewer cards out before manufacturing could really ramp up (both attempting to steal the others' thunder).

Alright though, here is my point:

I can sell my 9800 pro + 512MB of ram I am not using, + a wireless mouse I am not using and never will for:

Enough money to buy the 6800

The upgrade will cost me 0$ and a few parts that I won't use before they become outdated.

So really my question is, is it worth trading my 9800 pro with VGA silencer for a 6800? That is basically the idea

Sure, I could wait and get a GT or ultra, but at that point, I wouldnt have a buyer for the 9800 pro, it wouldnt be worth as much, and I would actually have top spend money rather than trade parts I don't need

Thanks!

Plus, I can hopefully sell far cry after I play it, and that will bring down the cost buy perhaps another 20$

hmmmm

any more opinions? i'm need to decide soon.

Dude, make the decision yourself, and if you sel Farcry, that's the only game that would even notice any difference between the cards. I say don't bother and just sell the other stuff and keep the cash. Whatever you want to do is up to you though.

If you are looking for a new videocard then 6800 is an excellent choice. buy.com has 6800std "on order" for 250, add another 10 for S&H and you get an awesome card for only 260. IMO 6800 for 260 is a much better deal than 9800PRO for 200 simply because you'll have to throw out 9800 in a year or so, 6800 on the other hand should last you another two and a half years. Is it worth paying extra 60 bucks? Definitely...

Of course if you already have 9800 than upgrade indeed would be worthless because 9800 still have enough juice to last a year by which time the prices on 6800 should fall down to reasonable levels. But if you are looking for a new videocard you can't beat 6800 value...

Having that said I'm actually still using 2 if not 3 year old 8500 😀

WHERE? From the Manufacturer
the GeForce 6800 . . . runs at least a full 12% faster than the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5950 Ultra or the ATI 9800XT ? the previous generation's top performers

the 6800 comes in at an MSRP of only $299
You also get to save $10 off MSRP

Hey, the point is that I can basically get it free, for a straight up trade fro a 9800 pro and other junk I dont use, but no one wants to buy... All i'm asking is, is the 6800 a good swap for a 9800 pro for free, because I can't find any benchmarks that compare the two, only to the XT. Otherwise the decision would be much easier.

Is there anything that the 9800 pro will be FASTER at?

Go for it. It's free. You get a new generation card and somewhere down the road you'll do it again. Don't even think about, just do it. Now, I think the best bang for the buck is a Powercolor 9800se. Softmoddable to a 9800 pro. And you can get it for $120 or less.
