newegg ecs k7s5a + AMD xp2000 stop error boot device

I have a new board (v3 with xp sticker)and retail cpu - replaced my old k6-2+ 450 @550 last night. trouble - I am running win 2k professional and on my first boot up I get this stop error - 'inaccessible boot device' - I was able to boot up to win2k from the cd and did a repair but still have the same problem - stop error.
I am using an antec 350 psu, crucial 256mb pc133 and a maxtor diamondmax 40g hard drive. I ran a drive diagnostic and got back an error - could this have been caused by the new board? any ideas on how to fix?

Sounds like that is the problem; not the MB or otherwise. What "error" did you get?

Did you do a fresh install of Win 2000? I tried to install a K7s5a in a friends machine (running XP) without doing a fresh install and I got the same error. As soon as I did a fresh install it worked fine.

This is because your existing W2K installation does not have a driver for the mass storage controller your boot drive is on. I presume this is IDE, and the new board has a different brand chipset than the old one?

Well let's see - I did not do a fresh install of win2K until late last night and it did work - in fact I now have 2 win2k's on the machine (one appears to be in winnt and the other in windows directories) - the old one still does not work and the new one does!

I did not have this problem until I changed the board from the old p5a to the k7s5a. of course, the new intall of win works but I don;t have access to any of my programs, etc. The hard drive is ide and the matrox error code is 362VL1.

so if as peter suggests the old install does not have the driver I should be able to add it and use the orginal install of win2k???? that's a question.

I could not find that error message on MS's site but that is not unusual. Is there more text to the message than that? If you can get into your original 2K build, I would think you could load the driver. Otherwise, you may be out of luck. However, Peter obviously has more knowledge in Win2k than I do so maybe he can offer more help. Good Luck.

buz2b - thanx - the error code was for the maxtor diag - I could not find the error code on the Max site. The MS error is 'inaccessible boot device' followed by some location codes which I do not have handy.

You might be screwed. If the HD was SCSI, they (MS) seem to have all kinds of workarounds listed in the KB articles. Nothing for IDE HDD's though. Let's hope others can offer better results.

If you have not fixed the problem yet this may help - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article

If this article is not relevent then go to Microsoft Knowledge Base and search for both INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE and for the STOP: error that you are getting.

It's Win2K, not XP. Might have some similarities, but not sure. BTW, welcome to AT.

dbruce - thanx for the post - although you point to xp it certainly defines the problem. i had searched the ms site the other night but came away empty. the idea of doing an 'in place upgrade' is appealing but seems to be for xp and not 2000. i'll have to poke around some more on the ms site - there appear to be some registry edits which migt do it but I am registry-shy having messed up a couple over the years.

Again if this is not exactly your issue, search for the STOP: error (if there is one) that you are getting.

dbruce, I just wanted to thank you for the info you've listed here in this thread. That MS Knowledge Base article helped me solve the problem I was having with my new mobo. I'd gone and started my own thread thinking it was a Gigabyte issue as opposed to a Win2k issue.
