Also, someone mind explaining why I should stay away from the MPX version save the broken USB issue?
 
I thought the MPX version was the way to go, since you don't need registered ram (at least on 2 of the slots) and hell, broken USB is just another reason to splurge on a USB2.0 card 🙂

any insight?
 
MPX is better, other than the "broken" usb. It's got the 66Mhz PCI slots if you ever put in a decent SCSI or IDE RAID card - pretty good performance jump.

My company is using the MPX in our server.
 
AFAIK the MPX version is a standard ATX format, and won't need a special case or power supply. I think the mormal MP boards are large and require a 400W certified power supply...

No, the MP boards I believe require a quality 300W power supply, and are standard ATX form factor. They might not fit in real small cases tho. I am pretty sure if you got one of those Antec cases that keeps appearing in this forum, it will fit.

Regardless of how many they have, buying Newegg refurb mobos is a gamble, and a poor one at that. I've had to send two of three I purchased back after wasting the time to diagnose why they wouldn't boot. And none of them had all the parts or any instruction manuals.
 
is it true that these can run the athlon xp cpus rather than spending extra on an mp. also whats this broken usb issue we'er refering to?
 
You get 4 64-bit 33MHz PCI slots on the MP compared to 2 64-bit 66MHz PCI slots on the MPX. That's reason #1, because with 64-bit 66MHz you get a huge bandwidth increase (which you'll actually need if you're planning to run a dual channel U160 SCSI RAID). Reason #2 is because the MPX comes with integrated 3Com LAN and the MP doesn't. Of course the best thing about both boards is NO VIA. You get excellent IDE/PCI transfer rates. Besides if you're planning on buying either board, what the heck do you need USB for? Don't usually see USB in server applications. But if you're planning on getting the MPX, go with the Asus instead of the Tyan. The Asus comes with a USB 2.0 card to cover for the broken USB, plus it lets you adjust memory timings (not to mention the 3-phase power config, sweet).
 
You don't need registered ram for the MP version and it'll make a nice server with a couple of cheap Durons or Athlons. You'll have to spend extra for the MP cpu's to use the MPX version.

As for the 33 or 66 slots... Almost a moot point since if you're looking for high end stuff this isn't it but it's good enough for a 24/7 light duty server.

Both boards will work on a full normal atx case with a quality 300+ watt PS. You will need some good (great) ventilation in that case to keep these from frying your fast cpu's.

My understanding was the the later revision of the MP board was picky about using registered RAM, but the earlier revisions were more likely to run ok with unregistered. At least thats whet I remember reading somewhere...I don't have one myself
 
Yea these are great MBs. I ordered one a month & a 1/2 ago, Installed XPpro and haven't turned it off since, no lockups. I'm running game servers ( 1 internet & 1 LAN) on it 24/7
