<< Couple of questions:

Have any of you who suspect that their CC were stolen from Newegg contacted/alerted them that they have a possible security problem? I'm sure Newegg is a reputable business that doesn't want something like this to dirty their reputation. They may have a bad apple working for them in a sensitive position, or they may be getting hacked and not know it. Contact Newegg and let them know.

I can understand someone being able to use a stolen CC at a porn site, but every retail website I've ever bought anything from will ONLY deliver the merchandise to the billing address of the CC.
>>

There are many reputable sites that will deliver to a different address than the billing one. You can do it as a gift at some places and then get it done that way and some will just let you do it straight out. There are obvious drawbacks and advantages to this and I guess the companies want the largest advantage of internet shopping, convenience, to remain and allow shipping gifts and to other addresses. Oh well.

Two days ago I got a call from my bank, they said my card was closed and the fbi was looking into internet fraud. So far all they have been able to tell me is that a web site was hacked and they instantly closed all the accounts that could have been taken. They haven't been able to tell me what store it was yet but I've bought quite a bit of stuff from newegg as well, if I found out it is from newegg I'll post right back here.

I used my mom card at newegg, and then withen the next week she got called from the
bank saying that someone had TRIEd to make fraudulent charges on her card :-/. The only place it had bene used recently was newegg. I had ordered from them many times before WITH NO PROBLEM. BUT I always check destryoy number after transaction. Well this last time i decided not to and then my mom got that call, since then I have ordered from them and had the # destroyed, so maybe someone from newegg is getting the number maybe an employee gone bad

<< I can't imagine why in this day and age companies are still keeping CC info in their servers. I believe that for newegg you have to unclick the 'save' as opposed to actively clicking 'save', right? >>

The problem is, there are still too many people out there that can't be troubled to dig into their wallet for the card (or have the numbers memorized like I do) when making a purchase, so they like having places they shop at a lot store this information so they aren't bothered when they order again. Eventually they will get burned. I try to avoid shopping online at places that do not give me the option to not store my information online. Of course, now I have another new account at buy.com to erase because I had to buy from them and they always store that info.

I think more sites should require you to add the check digits on your card (the 3/4 digit number printed on the card but available ONLY to the one holding it). Just an extra added measure or protection,. IMO.

Just out of curiousity (for all of those who have had their card ripped off), is this only happening to people who left their CC # stored at Newegg or everyone?

I haven't used them personally, but I was considering it in the near future (which will obviously be put on hold now).

If you don't mind, I would be interested to know what card you have. It sounds to me like they are the only ones on the ball here. Except for the FBI of course.;)

Not that it will matter in most likelyhood, but, this is/was a Chase Platinum. Oh, and I've never left my "info" on any site and will never.................as mentioned, I will and have canceled transactions because they would keep my info................

BTW: Newegg is "Investigating" according to C/S which most likely equates to doing little or nothing..............

Here are a few things you can do to "bust" the individuals if you live in the United States.

1) once you've relized that your CC # has been stolen report it to the Credit Card company as soon as possible.
2) Contact the website that the comprimised number was used at and let them know, also get the transation log if at all possible AND find out where the goods where shipped (if any where bought)!
3) contact the FBI with the information, they can fallow up. if you get an IP address use ARIN's whois to look up the IP owner and contact them aswell.

sometimes you may have to go to the CC processor that processed the CC to get the information.
I am currently helping another member with this situation and this is what I have learned from it.

Hmm, lets see. Bought stuff from Newegg, had fradulent charges. This maybe quite elementary but I bet you bought stuff online correct? Lets think about that. Now most of the protection for your card is going to be offered by newegg's secure server, but if you've failed to update windows with all of the security patches and/or store your CC info anywhere other than just your wallet (i.e. MS Wallet or Yahoo, etc...) you're going to run the risk of someone else finding that information. Something to chew on. I've always been of the mind set to troulbeshoot myself before I go pointing the finger at someone else...

I see a great deal of troubleshooting going on in this thread. This is no coincidence apparently. When people say they got hacked on a card they used at Newegg and nowhere else I'll believe them.

damn ... I've bought a TON of crap online this month ...

I use Chase Platinum as well ... I refuse to use my bank card online ... 'cause once my cash is gone, I can't pay my CC debt!

I wonder if there's a security problem ... *shrug* ... their stuff is too well priced to buy from anywhere else!

Rather, I'd choose to believe my own experience (that being that I've ordered from Newegg dozens of times and never had any issues) than someone in an unknown situaiton that may yet have many other variables that were over looked and could have contributed to the situation. I side with the known, rather than jumping to conclusions, and see enough people hear agreeing with that. Enough to make me wonder (if it were I that started the post) just what had really gone on.

I'd wager to say that I've bought at least as much and most likely more than you have from NewEgg since the place opened and this was a first for me online period! Also, Everything on my system is totally updated as it always is, and since I've never had this happen before, I very seriously doubt that's a possibility! Lastly, I've never allowed any sight to "keep" my info for future use and will not buy from those that do not offer a choice not to. No, this is not a random incidence and it is not because I was lax in any manner in fact, how many people do you know, or do you yourself even have a card exclusively for use in purchases from a specific online store as I did???? Face it, this isn't "foolproof" and to be perfectly honest, would be quite easy for someone "inside" or with the correct "tools"...............;)
