UPDATE: Did the live chat thing today, they said if the product was unopened they could waive the restocking fee. I'm used to those live chat things taking forever and being full of incompetent people, but the CS rep I had was able to resolve the issue. Go Newegg!
For the record I just said the costs to return were going to be too much for me to exchange the RAM and I wanted to cancel my RMA so I could just sell it somewhere else, so they offered to waive the restocking fee. I had a feeling that fee was mostly to cover the discount they have to sell at if it has to be listed as an Open Box item anyways.
OP:
I figured I'd upgrade the RAM in my MBP (13", bought last summer) so I hopped on Newegg and ordered a 2x2GB memory combo. Decided to look up the instructions for installation on Apples website and that's when I saw this thing takes DDR3 memory (I just assumed DDR2 because all my other computers run it and I really didn't think it over). So I look into the process, request an RMA and it gets instantly approved. First thing I notice is the $12 restocking fee that gets subtracted from what they credit to me. Now I go to print the shipping label which they charge me another $8.88 for.
First off, wtf does it cost $8.88 to ship a box of laptop memory, and secondly what does Newegg do that costs $12? I assume that restocking fee is usually used to cover the costs they incur when they have to sell things as open box (which this will still be NIB). It's costing me over $20 to return an item in new condition.
I'm a reasonable guy... it was my careless mistake that caused this mix-up but I'm left feeling that Newegg is making money off this RMA request.
