What's the consensus on this price? It doesn't seem like much of a shell shocker to me. I'm looking to pick up five of these drives by year's end for a NAS build. So I'm willing to wait for better deals. I'm just wondering how much lower I can reasonably expect the price to fall.

For magnetic storage, you always pay a premium for the very large sizes. Right now, those sizes are 3TB and 4TB. As far as I am aware, only Hitachi makes a 4TB drive via 4 or 5 platters. This means, that practicly the 3TB drives are considered high-end and will thus carry a price premium which really makes this a great deal. I don't see this dropping down until we start seeing 4TB drives from the other vendors such as Seagate and Western Digital. Then again, this is just speculation.

Meh! And ho hum! Wait, these Red's have been falling fast since they were released. It should be at $130, and the 2TB at $100. Will be soon enough. Mixed bag reviews too. Nothing all too compelling for 5400 spinner, sans the pretty red label of course.

To boot off of a greater-than-2TB HD, requires an EFI/UEFI BIOS on your motherboard. Any PC with SATA ports and a modern 48-bit LBA BIOS can use them as data drives, as long as the OS supports GPT partition scheme.

All of the information regarding why someone would want their red drive seems like a lot of marketing rather than any actual benefits.

I ask because the 3TB green drives can be had for $130-140.

Yeah, I'm hoping for $120 or lower during a Black Friday deal or similar. As for mixed reviews, I think that's the case for just about any modern drive. I've been looking at the WD Greens, the new Seagate Barracuda and these and it seems to me that the Reds are the way to go for my ZFS NAS. 1TB/platter, low power, TLER, 24/7 rating (as compared to the Seagates) and decent performance. I suppose it's still up in the air as to what the future holds in terms of reliability, but I'm willing to bet it'll be similar to the Greens if not better. Someone else linked the Anand review that sings their praises.

The other issue for me is that I don't think I'd like to buy all at once. As has been mentioned, Newegg is not always the best shipper of HDDs. Plus, I'd hate to get more than one drive with a similar latent defect due to bad batch or whatnot. Maybe I'm being paranoid.
