Newegg 2500+ processor question

I noticed the OEM was 85.00 and retail box was 90.00. they both had the same part number except for the last part.

Retail = AXDA2500BOX
OEM = AXDA2500DKV4D

Are these the same part number. I would much rather have a unlocked chip with 3 year warranty then an unlocked chip without. But then I would rather have a OEM unlocked chip then a Retail Locked chip..

Any comments.

Any unlocked 2500+ coming fro da egg at the moment is most likely old stock, but with the volume of sales they have I would place the odds as very slim you'd get one unlocked. BTW the retail #'s are no indication of the week and/or stepping of the CPU you'll recieve and sites that offer particular steppings and dates charge premiums for them, as you may or may not be aware of. The only advice I can offer from personal experience is that the Retail AMD CPUs I've purchased have always been among the best steppings for overclocking. I quite often have to 🙁 over putting what looks from the date and stepping to be a jewel of a CPU into a client's system with the stock cooler and default speed in a board with no overclocking options knowing it'll never be overclocked, and I don't test their overclockability for sh*ts&giggles because that violates the warranty and would be an unethical business practice.
 
Thanks for the info. Im taking the chance with newegg retail for 5 dollars more. If logic serves me correct in your statement, more people are buying the oems anyways so the chance of me getting an early cpu with the retail should be a better shot then getting a oem. Plus I am getting the heatsink, fan, and 3 year warranty(depending on if i want to OC it).

Im taking a chance with both I figure as i bought the ASUS deluxe refurb for 59.00 as well. Saving me 60 dollars of retail. We shall see.

Do you have any RAM recommendations. I currently have crucial pc2100 1 gig but was thinking about upgrading for overclocking.

That's how I see it too, except I have no idea if more users grab the OEM or retail. I should mention Newegg does sometimes specify that an OEM is a particular model like a T-bred B and the OEM# can be used to tell what the voltage of the CPU is but with the 2500+ that's not really a factor. OCZ, HyperX, and Corsair XMS are all excellent so any of their 3200DDR with fast timings is going to be a winner. Just check you board's manufaturer's web site to see what the recommended ram is or do a quick serch to see what ram is working great for others with your board model.
 
hey i bought a 2500 recently from new egg and it was locked .. i say go wit the retail version cause of the warranty it will easily overclock to a xp3200 mine did anywase. also look at zipzoomfly.com they have good prices and free second day air i also went with the corsiar xms 3200 ram and a aero7 fan i ran prime 95 for 12hours and my temps never got past 49 c not the best but no bad... and its freakin fast.
 
Couple things here...

First the 5 more bucks is well worth it in my case...i got on eof the newer HSF with copper bolted onto the bottom of the aluminum heatsink...It is keeping my chip below 50c load (prime12 hours) at 200fsb and 2.2ghz w/ 1.65v....


secondly with the 2500+ barton the multiplier is quite low already and most of them are getting to 200fsb whether with dfault vcore or up to 1.75v....I think there is a better then not chance you can get and obtain 200fsb...Then newer chips are the ones being locked and in that case it is more likely the newer chips are a better yield and can obtain that speed....So get an old chip and likely you need the multi adjuster cause it can't do 200fsb at defaul 11x....


If you have to have an locked chip then I would suggest getting the chip at a smaller online retailer, and not volume ppl like newegg and zipzoomfly...

The stock heatsinks that come with the new chips are fairly decent as far as stock heatsinks are concerned. They certainly could have sold the chips with worse. Besides for $5 you get a 3 year warrenty and a nice hsf that you can use for parts or chop up to cool your shiny new 9800 pro 🙂

Yep and even does 209fsb w/ 1.7v just fine with temps only hitting 52c after 4 hours of prime.....I am terribly impressed...My only guess is this is actually a retail hsf rated for the 3200+ processor already and now at 209fsb I am just playing in the headroom....

Why is it that nobody noticed he said he had PC2100 ram? Marks, you aren't even going to be able to use that proc., unless you either buy new ram, or underclock it.

Along with my new MB and CPU, I'm getting a 9800 Pro. Guess I'll go to the video forum to look up this one.
 
I was thinking about selling both sticks of 512 and getting one stick of corsair 512 pc3200. Hopefully in an even trade. Any recommendations on ram. I would like the good stuff but at the cheapest price as I am on a budget.
