newcastle or barton or winchester?

Barton = aXP A/462
Newcastle = a64 s754
Winchester = a64 s939

I would suggest the s754 because it is cheaper. Also there are less expensive and more motherboards to choose from. Most people on this board with the winchester cores have not gotten to 2.6ghz like most reviews say.

I want 2 get a 3200+ but it costs like $50 more than a 3000+ (a64 754).. if I can in future.. I may upgrade but I think i'll go with the 3000+ unless you guys can find one cheaper than new egg.. I dont want it OEM

Not Barton.

Even if you're very tight on cash, considering the total cost of a system, it doesn't seem worthwhile for me to drop below the A64 2800. Save on everything else instead. I don't even understand the reason for a thing like Sempron 3100+. Not at its current price anyway.

s754 3000+, 3200+ and 3400+ are pretty good value. Particularly in combination with a modest, simple and cheap MB, and standard PC3200 ram.

3400+ is approaching $200 (from above 🙂 ), and is pretty expensive to beat in actual performance.
It tends to be one of the A64s that is performing well in relation to its 'rating' (3400+).

s939 3500+ is IMO somewhat unconvincing, and s754 3700+ outright disappointing. I feel next stop from 3400+, is 3800+, and that one is considerably more expensive.

(Disclaimer: I never consider OC when I post. Don't quite believe in it. ...And I won't argue. OC if you want, but don't involve me.)

I've never overclocked before.. I may overclock later.. but I dont know when I'll need firewire...but I like the gigabit lan that the msi board provides..

do you really have a need for gigabit lan? Do you have a gigbit network? Or even a gigabit router?

for $100 the DFI UT NF250 is a really good board. It's probably the best oc'ing board out there, and it comes with gigabyte lan, firewire, and all the goodies.

I'm sort of confused, i keep reading reviews and gudies where chaintech boards are very good for oc'in ...Little confused....any insight?

Get the Athlon Ultra 64000 Barton care with Socket 9999 and 16 channels, make sure you get the Uber stepping model with flux capacitance.

i have both.. and consider them both very solid (tho the early vnf3 bios' were a bit flaky). the vnf3 actually overclocks the same cpu (newcastle 3000+) a bit higher (a bit over 2.4ghz vs a bit over 2.3ghz), but not noticeably so. if you want the hardware firewall and gbit lan, get the dfi. if they aren't important. save the cash and get the vnf3. again, imo from having both either one is a very good s754 board.

s939 am using the neo2 plat. have had no problems, and am running a 3000+ winchester

9x270Mhz
270 Mhz memory (540DDR)
270 HTT 3x
STOCK voltage (haven't tried overvolting for higher clocks, am ok w/ current results)

no issues w/ the MSI board other than I have a dual layer nec3500 dvd/rw now, and the bios takes forever to boot when it's installed.. still trying to figure that one out.
