Audio issue *might* also be a BIOS setting. The motherboard may have different choices for the format of the sound signal that comes out of that spot on the board, or the whole thing may be turned off to start with.

Yeah I went to change the setting in BIOS but when I tried to log back in with the new setting my computer got frozen on the windows loading screen :S Is that normal?

Right after BIOS completes boot, hit F8 to go into Windows Safe Mode. See if you make it all the way in, if so uninstall the sound driver and boot regular mode and reinstall the sound driver.

Hey

I did that and managed to get in ok.

Still no sound but when I went to plug the speakers in I heard a bit of static?

I'm assuming that you have the Intel HD audio enabled in BIOS, the physical HD audio connector (and not the AC'97 plug) plugged in to the motherboard, and the BIOS set to output HD sound to the front panel connector? You'll also want to make sure you are installing the most recent driver available on the ASUS website (it isn't always the driver contained in the AI Suite II package).

Also, are you running the most recent UEFI BIOS on your board? Including the original BIOS, there have been 10 UEFI BIOS releases for this board alone. If you decide to update it, download the UEFI BIOS from the support website instead of using the ASUS update software as the most recent BIOS doesn't always appear in the ASUS update software for some reason.

Finally, when you plug in your speakers or headphones, does the ASUS sound configuration application pop up asking you what you have plugged in (i.e. speaker, headphone, etc) and allowing you to configure the device? This should happen on both the rear and front audio jack connectors.

Does the case come with 2 audio cables? One for AC97 and one for (what is now) regular. Make sure you are using the right connector for the port you are using (the pin arrangement is the same, if I remember correctly.)

It comes with one cable with two plugs (Intel HD Audio and AC'97 legacy audio) on the same audio cable. You then have to activate the proper configuration (either Intel HD audio or AC'97 legacy) in the UEFI BIOS to match whichever you have plugged in to the audio header on the motherboard.

That's right- HD audio enabled in BIOS, HD audio connector on MOBO and latest drivers installed.

Ah I'm not actually sure about that one- I'll have to update that.

And yes it does ask me what I've plugged in but only when I plug something in the back panel, not the front

Hey

I know this thread is slightly old but still looking for a solution!

I brought a new headset- a USB one this time and i've plugged it into the front usb port.

It's coming up in my audio device manager as "HD audio 2nd output" and I've set it as my defualt device.

The headset ot a plantronics gamecom 780. When i change settings on the headset itself (turn volume up, turn mic off etc) I can hear beeping noises through the headset. However, when I go to play music or such there's no sound coming through?

I am literally ready to jump out a window :L Hugs for the person that solves my problem? :p

You don't need 750W with your current system unless you are going to OC heavily. Also, consider getting an SSD for OS drive.

Check your various audio settings. Make sure (for example) your front panel sound is not turned off or set to not detect it.).
Edit: My headset was plugged in, but not all the way in. Since it's a new case, you may just need to make sure it's fully plugged in. Grab a flashlight and take a look after you re-seat it.

I thought that "HD audio 2nd output" was if you had multi-streaming enabled on your Realtek onboard audio chip. IOW, you can configure the front-panel audio jacks on your Realtek to act as though they are a separate audio device than your rear jacks.

I think USB audio devices should have "USB" in their name.

I've already built it :) I thought it would better to be safe just in case I needed it in the future.

I'd have loved an SSD but couldn't afford at the time :/
