Newbie to OC'ing. XP 1700+

I'm new to OCing. I've tried reading through some guides but I'd thought I'd post here once before venturing into it myself.

I have a XP 1700+ Tbred B. AIDA32 tells me it is at (5.5 x 266). Does this sound correct? I think my post says (11x 133) which sounds better.

I've read in a couple guides that I have to adjust some settings in my BIOS BEFORE I start adjusting FSB or multiplier settings? Or can I just start adjusting settings?

What is easiest to adjust - FSB or multiplier - for a newbie like myself ? I'm just a little hesitant at OC'ing because I'm new to it. Any strategies or suggestions would be very helpful!

Also, if i run into a problem after adjusting settings - is there a way to restore original settings - CMOS maybe?

Thanks guys,

if anything goes wrong, you can clear the CMOS from the mobo, look in your manual to see where the jumpers for restoring the defaults are located

i think i have done this about 50 times the last 2 days 🙂

I think that your mobo is crying out for a new bios...
Updated bios should contain the XP 1700 microcode which should tell this mobo how to tackle the new chip..
Good luck!

yeh.;... adjust FSB first.... then when you can't increase it anyomre, start with the multiplier. At one point you might want to increase the voltage too.
I use the same mobo.. if something goes wrong (and the machine won't boot), turn it off then hold [Ins] while powering up. It will reset your overclock setting 🙂
I'm running 1700+ at 2000MHz now (10x200)

i have that mobo, and its pretty cool, none of this resetting jumpers hassle. whenever ive gone too far with frequencies on my chip and it wouldnt run, i just press the power button while holding insert key and it reverts to cmos defaults

I've started to adjust FSB. I lowered my mutliplier to 10, and my FSB to 152 for now. Before I continue, WCPUID says that my System Bus is at 305.69 MHz DDR - is there a maximum for this value? Is this determined by my memory?

ahh nevermind, it makes sense now...166 FSB = 333MHz DDR...in sync with my PC2700, but can i go further with my FSB?? Even though my memory is only 333DDR? Or should I keep it at 166 and start upping the multiplier?

Currently - 10.5 x 165

So should i stay at 166 on the FSB and just keep upping the multi? (can you run higher FSB with PC2700 DDR?)

I'm at 1823+ MHz (166 x 11.0)

I just finished upgrading (well its stability testing - long term) a system for a friend and I am using several of the same components. The Athlon XP 1700+ TBred (JIUHB - I think, should of wrote it down), Epox 8RDA+ and a Vantec Aeroflow. I bought the processor at Newegg for $43 shipped and its running 2.2gig (200 * 11) stable as can be or so it seems. It is outbenching my P4 2.4 @ 2.8, in most things. Dropped a Sapphire 9100 $75 shipped in that system and it is 3DMarking at 10k. Only weak spot is that he was real short of funds so we sacrificed and bought Normal Corsair 2700 and it is fine, but starts to throw a fit above 170, so I am running async.

Oh well..... 😀

I'm at (11 x 168) running 1.85 Ghz and I'm running Sandra Burn-in right now to test CPU and Memory.

Also, with stability testing, i've been running the CPU Arithmetic, CPU Multi-Media, Memory Bandwidth, and Memory Cache tests in Sandra. Are these the ones I should be testing?

well at 10x200 my system locked while loading winxp, so i went 10.5 x 190 and it loaded. testing stability now, but everything looks nice and temps are good. thanks for helping a newb guys.

Sounds like 1700+s are almost as good as 2100+s when it comes to overclocking. Anyone on the highest they have gotten with thte 2100+?
