Newbie subwoofer question.

I have an old Panasonic SC-HT290 Home Theater in a box system that the receiver went out on. So, I replaced the receiver with a Panasonic SA-XR55 Receiver. I am still using the speakers from the old SC-HT290 setup, but the subwoofer was previously connected to the receiver via two wire speaker wires. The new receiver doesn't have two wire sub output, but instead has a single RCA out. Is there a cable that can connect the new receiver and the old subwoofer, or do I need a new subwoofer?

I was looking at this and this, or even this assuming I need a new sub. Yes I know I'm cheap...

I'm guessing that your original home theater in a box had a passive subwoofer; in other words, the receiver powered the sub as well as the speakers. This is not ideal, because it overworks the amp in the receiver (which is almost always underpowered already, in a box system). So when you upgraded receivers, you now need a powered sub.

Get the Dayton and be glad you were forced to upgrade.

Yup. The old receiver powered the sub. Thank you for the advice.

The Dayton 12" is only $25 more, which is worth it IMO. That's a nice receiver; I've had mine for the past year and a half, and I really like it.

I am going to be buying a sub in the next few months and had decided on an SVS PB10-NSD but that Dayton is getting good reviews and is much cheaper.

Will I notice much of a difference between the two?

yes you will notice a difference if you hooked both of them up and compared.

the dayton is a great "entry level" sub that will probably do what 80% of the users of HT want it to do. if you are an audiophile then you will probably be disappointed with everthing but the price of the dayton.

the dayton will sound very boomy (loud for less power).
it also gets kinda muddy on the low end.

i actually run the dayton 12 sub in my HT and haven't had any complaints.

the svs is probably going to perform clearer and hold it tones on the low end better.
