newbie RAM question

I'm upgrading the ram in my dad's laptop and was checking dells site where it says that it's memory modules must be fitted as a matched pair

Installation in matched pairs of modules is required, please order quantity two.

presumably this only means you have to buy 2 modules if you require twice the ram? will it still work if i just install one module?
