i have a cabling guy running cat 5e from the room where our comcast cable comes into our house to all the bedrooms next week. he's installing wall jacks at each end of each run. i have a linksys befsr81 router as well. should the network install be pretty plug and play once the lines are run?

what i think i will need to do is the following:
1. run patch cables from each wall jack into each pc nic card
2. plug all runs into the router (again using patch cables from the wall jacks)
3. plug cable modem into router

should that be it, and what sort of problems might i come across?

all comments (even condescending ones if they are accompanied by some useful info) are very much appreciated!! one of my good friends is a network guy so i'll probably lean on him if needed but i'm hoping this is pretty straightforward.

That's the gist of things, yeah.

If you're having a professional do the job, I wouldn't sweat it at all, just ask him if you have any questions about the install.

Curious though, how much are you paying for how many rooms and feet of cable run?

i'm sure i'm not getting this done by the cheapest guy and i'm in the sf bay area...he's charging $115 per run including the cat 5e and wall mounted jacks at all end points. there are five runs and he's going under the house to do them as our attic doesn't run through the entire house. they are licensed and insured. while i could probably get it a little cheaper this guy seemed to know what he was talking about and i want the wall jacks to look finished. my house is a pretty large ranch so the runs will be up to about 100-150 feet in a couple of spots. i have to buy the patch cables is all. looks like i can get them for a few bucks each.

can i just buy any conforming patch cables (looking at some sites on the web)??
