😕 I have a dell optiplex gxi with a pentium 166mmx, and i have a spare amd 333, can i safely just swap these chips???

Actually I hit enter before I was done replying. AMD and Intel cpu's always take a different mobo. 😉

And to see how high a cpu your current mobo can accept go to dells page and search for that model number. I'd guess it'd take a pentium 200mmx max, maybe a 233.
 
why do you say amd and intel always take a dif mobo?

back in the socket7 days you could use either intel and amd chips on the same boards


but as blade said its unlikely your amd 333mhz will work on that board... most boards that old only support up to 233mhz
 
Doh! You are of course right Boonesmi. I was thinking of the newer systems. My first system build was a p200mmx and before that I had a p90 that I replaced with a higher amd cpu. How quickly me forgets. 😱 😀
