IIRC, it tells the computer how much RAM it can use for textures that otherwise would be put into the vid cards ram, but can't fit.
 
So does that mean if I have an older video card with a smallish (64mb, for example) amount of ram, but a relatively large amount of ram (2gb, for example), I would want a higher setting?

Sure, as far as I know, the aperature setting should be twice the video ram, so just set it to 128MB.

The proper amount is depended upon two items (1) the amount of vram your card has (more vram = less agp ap neccessary), and (2) system ram, the smaller amount of system ram the less you would want to "use" for AGP/video.

Now, notice the amount set for agp ap is not "reserved" for sole use by video. Rather will only be "allocated" to the vid when your card runs out. Still if you have 512MB of system ram, I don't think it w/b a good idea to set agp ap at 256MB. Conceviably, this would leave only the other 256MB available for system use if the video subsystem was using it.

I must say though that it's not clear which would take precedence if both the vid and system wanted to use it. I assume the vid subsystem, but don't actually know myself.

Mostly I find this an esoteric subject since using system for video is pretty slow/inefficient as the data must flow the other buses/mem controller etc as opposed to being right there on the card
