Basically, in a nutshell, smoothing out the bottom of the heatsink to a fine shine so that the contact with the die on the CPU is better. It reduces the number of air pockets which can build up in the small grooves in the metal, thus increasing the effectiveness of thermal paste and lowering processor temperatures.

how's it done? Fine grain sand paper or something? Or does the surface have to be machined?

Thanks, btw for the response.

Sandpaper. It's best to start with a rough grit and work your way higher to save time.

Wet/dry sandpaper is best.
