Newbie question regarding SD Classes

I'm looking to buy a Canon SX30. Now I know this device doesn't require more than a class6 SD Card, but a quick look at newegg showed me that Class10 cards are exactly the same price.

So I'm thinking Class10 is probably better but... will it be compatible with the device?
Also would Class10 make a speed difference (over class 6) if I use a card reader (that supports class 10) to transfer data to my computer?

Thanks :)

I'm currently using a Class10 SD with my SX30. They are compatible.

Can't answer your question about transferring data. Sorry.

I hope you're planning to use CHDK.

Had no idea what CHDK was

So far from what I read, it's a small software you install on your SD card that .. adds feature to your camera?

In what kind of situation do you feel CHDK helps you? Is it a really significant improvement?

CHDK adds a lot of features. The longest exposure time available on the SX30 is 15 seconds. CHDK will allow you to override this limit, and go for several minutes.

CHDK gives you the option to save .dng images in addition to the .jpgs. Gives a lot more editing options. Downside is, it takes the camera longer to save the bigger files, so continuous shooting is not an option. My local zoo opened a huge tiger exhibit, with lots of glass windows. Unfortunately, pretty much the only way to see the tigers is through the glass - safety glass, three panes thick, with a severe green cast. Much easier to correct in .dng than in .jpg.

It will also run scripts. I used the Ultra Intervalometer last fall to shoot pics of hummingbirds at the feeder. Set it up to shoot every four seconds, went inside so the birds wouldn't be frightened away. There are several other scripts already written, including motion detection.
