Newbie Question about fans

I new to all this o/c and quality hardware so here is my first newbie question:

I have been looking around and have decided to go for a Lian Li PC60 case. This comes with two fans in the front and one in the back.

Now initially my main aim is to create a nice system which won't get too hot but that will be very very quiet.

What do I need to consider and look for in terms of case fans, (i.e. do I need to replace the ones that come in the case) cpu fans and psu fans. If you can give me any ideas on the types of things I need and any names that would be great.

Also do I need anything special If I go for an Athlon T-Bird with a 266 FSB, and what does this mean and is it worth the price difference.

Thanks

First you should get some Panaflo L1A fans because they are very quiet. A Taisol CGK76009 is nice for the cpu and is quiet too. Use the power supply that came with your case and check if it is too loud. If it is too loud get any of the Enermax Whisper series power supply. 350w should be good enough for your system.

V,

Thanks for the advise. Right because the case has three fans does this mean I need 3 Panaflo L1A's? Also Where do I get them from? Can you recommend a web site? Will all three fans be going at the same time?

Is the Taisol CGK76009 a heat sink and a fan? Also where to I get one of these from?

The case does come with a PSU so I shall have to get a PSU.

Thamks, any other recommendations?

Also, what is the deal with heatsinks with regards to MB combos. I was looking at buying a Epox 8K7A with Tbird 1.2ghz that comes with a generic heat sink and fan.. where does one get a quality MB combo with good heat sink/fan?

I've been researching a similar system for myself. The Panaflo fans can be found at Caseetc, and the Taisol can be found at Compuwiz-Tech, or any number of stores through Pricewatch. For the Lian Li case I've heard the come with Adda high CFM fans, meaning they might cool better than the Panaflos, but will be louder. You would probably be fine replacing all three fans with Panaflos, if you're not going to OC. Yes, all 3 fans will be going at the same time. One is an exhaust fan in the rear, and the other 2 are intake fans in the front. The PSU will also help exhaust air in the rear. The Lian Li allows you to control the speed of the front fans, so if they are too loud you can turn them down.

The Taisol is a heat sink and fan combo (HSF), but you can change that fan too if you want better cooling (louder too). Again, if you're not going to OC, the stock fan should be fine. Otherwise find a good 60mm and replace the one on the Taisol.

Enermax PSUs are good (so I've heard) and so are Sparkle and Antec. Search the forums and you'll find more info. I think I'm going to go with Enermax myself, cuase they're supposed to be quieter.

QuietPC has some additional products, which might give you a good idea of things to buy, though I've heard their products aren't the best for the job. For example, the HSF they sell might not be powerful enough for a 1.2Ghz+ Athlon, and their 120V PSUs only come in 230 and 250 watts.

flight23, I'm not sure if combos will come with quality HSFs but I've heard the stock Athlon HSF is good for no OC rigs. Quiet and cools pretty good, so you could stick with that, or you might find it cheaper to search Pricewatch for separate HSF, Mobo, & CPU.

The Lian Li cases should come with two 80mm ADDA fans in the front. These are on a switch so that they can be regulated for speed. Pretty quiet from what I hear. Yes all three fans will be running at the same time. This is how you want it.
You should only need to buy one Panaflo. Get them at Caseetc.com or 2cooltek.com. Both these places have great sevice. I would wait until I actually had the case in hand before I bought anything though...

Yes, it is a heatsink and a fan. Inflowdirect.com has them here. Works well from what I understand.

Wait, so do you need to buy one or not? If you do need one I would also suggest an Enermax Whisper 350. Get them here at so-trickcomputers.com.

I just want you to know that the resellers I recommended are ones that I have dealt with and have given me good service, hence the recommendation.

Well you had questions about 266FSB Tbirds. This just means that it is guaranteed to run at whatever speed it is rated for on 133MHz front side bus. The difference between these and 200FSB Tbirds is that it will come with a different factory multiplier setting. But since these multipliers can be unlocked and changed it really doesn't matter if you get 200FSB Tbird or a 266FSB Tbird. You will see that motherboards are 100FSB or 133FSB while the chips are 200 or 266. This is because the chip actually interfaces with the chipset at DDR speeds giving you 2x100 or 2x133 leading to the chips having a 200FSB or 266FSB.

Finally, if you haven't decided on a motherboard yet, I highly recommend the Iwill KK266. This is a normal SDRAM board though, and not a DDR SDRAM board...

Search the anandtech archives about "overclocking the Athlon" and you'll find a lot of useful information. Good luck.

Thanks all for the excellent info. I can now go away and get a bit further in my planning and purchasing.
