My wife uses Napster very often--She downloads MP3s and also listens to streaming audio. If I convert her PC from ethernet to 802.11g, would she notice a degradation of the downloading/streaming performance?

If she Streams Stereo Mozart, Beethoven, and Pavarotti is her favorite singer, it probably will not be as Good.

For regular ?Noise? Music it does not matter.

Ok Jack, you should know thats not true, Wireless is the same as Ethernet only slower. But they are both faster than your Internet connection. I stream everything from classical to hardrock, I can't tell the difference between wireless and wired.

Are you just joking? :D She listens to everything--From Britney Spears to Metallica to Acid Jazz from Japan (but no classical).

I was thinking about what the fanboy was saying--That cable internet is still slower than Wireless G, but I suppose it will vary with each situation (walls, distance, etc). Guess I'll give it a shot and see if my wife complains :p

Give it a Try and see if you can detect the differences. My wife claims she can. :Q

Wireless is WAY different than ethernet. There are scant similarities like CSMACD but not much else.

nah, too much jitter with wireless. Smears the soundstage. :)

we're just having some fun banter.

When you use wireless the limiting factor in download or streaming performance is generally your internet connection.

Meaning, no performance hit/difference. wifey will be happy.

Your wife will be fine and will enjoy the Music. Do not worry about it.

However as far as the other ?Specialist? concern. It is not so simple there are few Theoretical and functional issues that still not researched.

It one thing when the Wireless moves File info that are decode on the receiving side (like a transfer of mp3 file). It is another issue when you stream the actual audio.

There are currently people in Universities that are doing Master and Doctorate thesis on these issues.

Quote:
The IEEE 802.11b standard with its two different access channel mechanisms, DCF and
PCF [5], has proved its maturity for best effort traffic. However, several studies
demonstrate that these WLANs are deficient in the support for the QoS requirements
that real time traffic needs [2, 3]. This is mainly due to propagation, multipath,
interferences and fading issues. Also the protocol itself adds latency in tradeoff for
robustness with the ACK and RTS/CTS mechanisms. A standard that supposedly will
solve these issues, the IEEE 802.11e, is currently under development [10].

There is No work as yet on 802.11g but in principle the problems might be similar since it is not just an issue of "Speed".

Sorry about the confusion, there will be no problems with music streaming.
