my gf is in her first year of optometry school and i'm helping her w/ some research on regional incomes. man was i suprised to see how much optometrist's make annually. as of 2002 they average 120k in california! i always thought they made high 90k's or low 100k's but that high?

this is a little shocking to me cause a few of my cousin's (who are dentists) always mentions that people in the health profession don't really recogonize optometrist as 'real' doctors. they see them along the lines of chiropractors and podiatrists. that's sad cause they go through the same amount of school as any other medical profession. as a matter of fact the first two years are almost the same as pharm, dental, and medical school. lots of bio chem class, labs, anatomy, otc, pharmacolgy...

applying to optometry school has always been a back up if i don't make it into dental school next year. but with the money they're making...fvck recognition. the hours aren't as intense and the work isn't has hard. i guess it might be better then looking at fvcked up teeth all day.

cliff notes: someone esle write it

The optometrists has a technical skill that takes years to perfect while the paramedic has a skill that is easily learned. Anyone can go through CPR training I guess.

just my opinion.

Real doctors go through residency and have an MD. Opthamologist == real eye doctor.

Paramedics have to get their EMT cert, have a vast amount work experience, and then go to another year of school. Your opinion is baseless.

hahaha, well i wouldn't say that. medical doctors are entirely different. it's more like detective work for the human body. why do you think doctors misdiagnos ~50% of the time? anywho, my gf used to work for an opthamologist in sf, she says they make the most money for the amount of work done. on a busy day he pulls in 60k:Q

yup, it's very hard to become an emt. i remember during college i tried getting an internship and man, stiff competition. they may not know how to cure an injured person but they know how to prevent them from dying if they could. plus, the medical terminology they must learn is almost has much as doctors. who do you think gives doctors the breakdown when they bring the patients in???

And the mechanic that keeps the ambulance running can barely feed his family.

thats somewhat true.
i've met a few who actually wanted to go....
those your talking about are called default dentists, it's funny how much they bag on doctors when they get out of dental school.
and there are those that just want the recognition but dont' want to do a lot of work and make a sh!tload of money.

i have all three types in my family. i'm trying to be the third one :), my gf and i want to be lazy doctors.

Optometry can be very profitable. You have your regular Vietnamese Walmart optometrists that don't make that much. Then, you have the private practice optometrists that sell designer glasses and make much more than 250K. You make a lot in any medical profession relative to others in the same field.

Dentistry: be an orthodontist.
Nursing: nurse practitioner or CRNA
Doctor: Plastic surgeon.
