Ok here is the situation....

My buddy has a computer with a broadband hookup to the pc.....He wants me to build his girlfriend a PC but want me to have it be able to share the broadband line.....

He first asked if he could put a splitter on the the cable line and I didn't think he could without either degrading the signal or messing something up....Am I wrong here???

What I have picked for here is a simple AMD PC with a shuttle MN31N mobo with onboard LAN....

Questions.....

1) can I use the LAN to hook to a NIC card I will buy for his PC???

2) will that then allow here to use the broadband modem???

How would you set this system up that would....

a) Share the broadband cable

b) share the printer/scanner

c) share files

Any info will be appreciated...NOte the PCs will be in same room not far from one another...

Pick up a standard DSL/cable router. The cable modem will plug into the router, and then both PC's will plug into the router to share the connection. See the FAQ here. Note that routers now are well under $50.

don't share that broadband without some kind of firewall proctecion like you'll get using a router's NAT
