Newbie needs help with first computer snag

Just built my first computer and my hard drive and DVD are not being detected. In a FongKai 603 chassis, what I have installed so far is:

Abit KT7 Raid mobo
Taisol CGK742092 Heatsink
Mushkin RAM 128mb
IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30GB (on IDE 1)
Pioneer DVD 16x (on IDE 2)
Floppy drive
Matrox Millennium G400 Max card

Initially, it did boot up and state that there were no IDE devices. Went into BIOS, had it read on auto which did read the two devices, saved & exited.

Now it will boot up only sporadically and goes to the "analysis" page of the mobo's BIOS (as if I had booted to the first page and pushed F1 to continue) - and still indicating no IDE devices.

BIOS manuevers have never been my strong hand. Is it possible I screwed up by saving & exiting? Really could use the help - can't figure what's going on.

😕

Medea, check out KT7 FAQ for a possible source of your problem. I don't have any experience w/ the KT7 RAID board, but from what I've read of the board in the Abit newsgroup it sounds like you're having a HiPoint RAID controller setup issue.

=======================

Here's some info from the FAQ:

How should I connect my hard drives and other storage devices on my KT7-RAID? ABIT advise that hard drives should be connected to the HPT370 controller (IDE 3 and 4), which supports ATA 33, 66 and 100.

ATAPI drives such as CDROM, DVD, CD-RW, Zip, LS120 and tape devices should be connected to IDE 1 and 2, as should additional disks when IDE 3 and 4 are fully occupied. CD-DVD and CD-RW devices may perform best when each is connected as IDE Master. So, if you have a CD-DVD and a CD-RW, connect each one as the Master on IDE 1 and 2, and use slaves for other devices like the LS120, tape, Zip, etc. Ensure the DMA-box is checked for your CD device properties under System Properties. Set the BIOS for the four primary IDE channels to AUTO to see your ATAPI devices correctly on the IDE 1 and 2 ports.

For RAID-0 the two disks must be placed on separate Highpoint IDE controllers.

Note that despite Highpoint documentation to the contrary, it appears that many users are unable to successfully use ATAPI devices if they are connected to the HPT370 controller (IDE 3 and 4).

See also the Highpoint HPT370 FAQ.

Medea, one of the questions I would have after quickly looking at this FAQ is this: to what IDE channels do you have your drives connnected? I recall reading somewhere that to set up the KT7 you need to put the HD on a non-HPT370 controller channel (1 or 2), set up the drive, then move it to channel 3 or 4. From what I read above you should not have your DVD on channels 3 or 4 at all.

Lastly, once you get your drives detected, get the latest Via 4 in 1 driver set and install them. It will save you a lot of headaches.

Good luck!

the DVD player should NOT be on IDE 2, only IDE 3 or 4. that should solve your problems. Only hard drives should be on the 1st two channels(ata100 RAID controller)
