Newbie needs help with Duron cooling

I am kinda new to PCs and have just bought a Duron 700 with a KT133 mb (I don't plan on overclocking just yet). I have a Coolmaster DP5-6H51 heatsink and fan. The Duron has 4 round foam bits stuck to each corner of the chip...I assume these need to be removed before attaching the HSF, as it will not be in contact if I left them? Why does the Duron have these on them?

I assume any thermal grease will do between the HS and Duron?

These might be dumb questions..sorry, but I don't want to fry my new toys out of ignorance. Cheers y'all.

I don't think you need to remove those 'foam bits'. They're supposed to prevent you from applying too much pressure in the wrong place and breaking the CPU or fix the HS out of alignment.

Thermal grease's supposed to be applied right on the CPU in contact with teh HS. Not on the whole of the chip. Some say that thermal compound is better for AMD chips.

You must leave the "foam bits" in place. They help assure that the heatsink will lay flat against the core. When you attach heatsink, the foam will compress to allow contact between core and heatsink.

Teatowel; you are destine to do as many things wrong as you can all in one shot, eh?

LEAVE THE FOAM PADS ON because they keep the fan level. The HSF will touch the die in the center because the foam will compress.

DON'T USE THERMAL GREASE because it only squirts out under the tension of the HSF. Use phase change thermal compound. It is more "solid" than "liquid" and has a tendency to "stay put". This is the stuff that tends to be on the bottom of HSFs when they come out of the box.

Fear not people... I wasn't gonna do ANYTHING till I was damn sure I knew what was going on!

According to the coolmaster website, the HS comes with the phase change interface material already applied, so I don't need to add anything myself, right?

Do not add.

Just make sure that there is no plastic over that PCTC. Often, because PCTC is tacky, they put a strip of tape OVER it, so you'll need to peel off some tape before sticking the HSF to the top of the CPU.

Just to add to JonnyGs post, some PCTC comes with 2 layers of protective film, ( I have to say though that I have seen this more with Thermaltake).
