newbie needs help - building a pc

bulding my first pc using an abit kg7 raid mobo, after putting in the retail xp1700 and hsf, ati 7500 aiw video card and the crucial pc2100 ddr ram, i tried testing it. for a split second the led light on the switch went on and also the fan and that's it. i took it out of the case and tried again, the same thing happened. Is it a mobo problem? oh by the way I am using a 300 watt ps, is this enough?

Did you hear any beeps from the board? Do you have anything else other than what you listed installed? Have you tried clearing the cmos on the board, reseating the ram and vid card? Are you sure you had the hsf installed correctly?

ejhehe, i've had this problem before, ended up having to clear the BIOS a few times... also, make sure your video card is seated properly (all the way down in the slot) along with the ram.

Try taking out all but the basic necessary components and booting. Only hook up the CPU w/HSF, one stick of RAM, the video card and the floppy drive with a boot disk. Unplug everything else and try to boot. As was mentioned, it is probably a good idea to clear the CMOS also. And yes, recheck your connections/installation on ALL your components.

I tried reseating the graphics card, heat sink and the stick of ram that is on the fourth slot. i also cleared the cmos a few times, still the same. that is all that is installed on the mobo right now. any other suggestions?

Reseating the RAM and video card is usually what works for me, but I have had a couple of occacions where I have had to reseat the CPU (sometimes several times) to get a good contact. Good luck.

this happened to me when building my computer everything turns on for a sec then turns off i didnt have my vid card on rite and it was sagging my mobo down... well actually my mobos bent in the middle a bitt oh well it runs ;-) put all standoffs and make sure ur vid card and any pci cards are rite

I moved it to the 1st slot (dimm1) and it still won't turn on. I placed on the 4th slot (dimm4) farthest from the cpu as was stated in Paul's unofficial abit kg7-raid faq.

Have you checked your PSU yet? Is it set to 115? The first computer I built the PSU I got was set to 230 not 115. I didn't even think about it. Once I turned my computer on it would work for a minute and then restart or lockup. I figure what happens defers between PSU brands.

I have a KG7-RAID and i do believe it is stated in the manual that you HAVE to fill the ram from Slot 1 to slot 4

Also, is your PSU working properly?

As to the psu, I have 2 set at 115 and used those. I reseated everything and still the same. I am going to order a few more sticks of ram and I'll let you guys know the result after I put them in. Thank you all.
