Okay in my office, we have about 7 computers and 7 Ethernet outlets. So we want to add another computer for a ?share folder? in stead of hosting the share folder on my co-workers computer as it is right now. He seems to be getting anoid when his computer slows down. :) Actually it?s his fault for running so many things at the same time. So I decided to buy a Router (Model SMC7004ABR) Is that what I should have bought? This ?share folder? didn?t need to access the internet at all but it needed to be able to be seen by all the other computers in the office so it can be access. So we decided to use my co-worker?s outlet and just hook it to a router and then to the ?share folder? computer and the co-workers computer. I plugged in all the info for the IP stuff. It was actually pretty simple (all in the network config screen) everything else I left as default. So the computers were able to share the internet, but we were not able to see the ?share folder? computer or my co-worker?s computer on the network. So what am I doing wrong? Should have change the LAN address to something else instead of the default?

P.S. Yeah yeah, I know we should get a professional, but hey we?re non-profit and it probably doesn't help that I'm the most computer literate in the office :)

Thanks for any help!!!

I would have probably just bought a hub or maybe a switch. I don't think a router is really needed here (unless you have a limited number of IP's). Anyway, I suspect the router has a built-in firewall and is blocking the other computers from seeing the two computers behind it. You could try disabling it. It would also help to know a little more about your network setup. Specifically, if the seven comps have real IP's or use private ones and some sort of NAT or IP masquerading.

They have actualy Static IP. Basically our Office is located in a building and within the building there are other office that have networks too. That why we can see other workgroups too. The ip setup by the networking guy in the basement... :) (They really do have there office in the basement) I would have asked them to install another outlet but the last time it took 6months to get one and I think they said that couldn't add anymore in.

Okay, so I'll see if disabling the firewall helps... Thanks

Also is there any places or book recommend for reading up on networking?

Edit: Even after disabling the firewall, you may still have problems just because the router does NAT/IP masquerading. I'm not entirely sure how Windows networking deals with that. There are plenty of people here who know more about it than I do, so I'm sure they'll be able to tell you.

make sure the new computer and your coworkers computer both have file/print sharing enabled. I suspect that is the case since everyone else is on the network and they can access it.
