Newbie installing retail processor...

Senior member
I've never done this before, and I bought a retail AMD XP 1700+. I was reading the directions and it said there should be a sticker on the bottom of the heatsink, but I found nothing but some pink stuff, which was already hardened (don't know if it should be or not). Before I fry my processor, does someone wanna tell me if i screwed up badly. Any help appreciated.

And sorry if this is in the wrong forum, this seemed like the right one. But I'm not sure.

Definitely the wrong forum. Try the "Technical Support" forum. Seriously, why would you think taking the plastic off the TIM on your heatsink was "highly technical"?

wrong forum.. so wat.... !! ?? i guess the person above is at the wrong website... AT is for people to discuss and also to help each other out... 791 posts... i really dunno wat u wrote...

kabir2.. the pink color stuff u see under the heatsink is the thermal compound... yes.. it should be harden... coz when the CPU heats up.. it will soften and act as a thermal compound.... so dun worri and put the heat sink on the CPU.... 🙂

but i do recomend u using artic silver II.. it can transfer the heat away much better... u hav to stratch off the pink color on the heatsink.. then apply the AS II... good luck

If you do Reapply With Arctic only do a very thing layer, more does not mean better. It will actually reduce thermal transfer. If you lapp(sand lots with high grit sand paper) YOu dont even need thermal compund infact i have found wiht larg eamounst of lapping the arctic silver reduced heat transfer.

Sigh, stop encouraging him. This IS the wrong forum for this discussion and for very good reasons. Kabir2: read the FAQ at the top of the page. Its not you in particular rather than you as the nth person who has posted something like this n->infinity

Sorry. I just think that if something is in the wrong forum, its alot easier to help the person out, rather than waste my time, and your time with a pointless, sarcastic reply. Doesn't Mookow have anything better to do than to waste both our time. Anyways, thanks to those of you who did help.

How about taking the time to find out what the forum is about instead of wasting other people's time?

It does say "Please Read!" for a reason you know.
