I just set up a wireless network. It involves two computers, a gateway, and a cable modem. The cable modem is connected to the gateway, which is connected to my desktop by ethernet. The 2nd computer, a laptop, is connected via wireless ethernet. The laptop uses windows 98 and the desktop uses windows 2000. I was already able to get the gateway to share the internet between the two computers, and I got encryption working, however, I am still unable to share files or printers. Whenever I go to network neighborhood on the laptop, or the desktop, and click on the other computer, all I see is blankness. The laptop is using FAT32 and the desktop has two partitions- the system partition is in ntfs, and the data partition uses FAT32. I would really appreciate it if someone could walk me through the process of sharing files and printers between these two computers.

go into the network neighborhood properties, then click on "file and printer sharing"

after you reboot, you can right click on folders and drives then go into sharing.

Sharing setting in Win98.

All computers have the same default protocol (TCP/IP, NetBEUI, or IPX/PX).

All computers have the same Workgroup name.

Each computer has it own unique name.

Make sure that you log on as Client for Microsoft Network.

There are three places to be checked for sharing:

The first two are in Control Panel, Network.

1. The Protocol that you are using for sharing, in the properties of the protocol it has to be bound to Client for Microsoft Network, and Sharing is Checked.

2. The general File and Print Sharing has to be installed, and checked.

The third in "My Computer" folder.
3. Individual Drives or/and printers has to be checked for sharing.

Well, I've got the files shared now- the only hurdle I need to cross now is the printer sharing. Could someone point me in the right direction?

I am in front of a Win98 computer (don?t know W2K from memory).

Open ?My Computer? Folder

Double Click on Printers, right click on the icon of the printer that you want to share.

Click on the sharing Tab, check Shared As: give the sucker a name.

Make sure that you have the Printer?s drivers install on all the computers that will use that printer.

Still no luck- it simply won't show up in the network neighborhood on the laptop. However, it will show up on the network neighborhood on itself. Does that mean anything? I have all the printer software for the printer set up on the laptop, and I think all I have to do is set the printer port across the network to the actual printer, but the printer simply won't show up!

Well, by tinkering around a bit, I finally got it working. Thanks for all your suggestions, they helped a lot!
