Newbie Cooling Question

I intend to Overclock a Duron 800mhz CPU, so I am a bit concerned about Cooling. Basically the CPU Heatsink appears to be set lower than the 4 rubber supports on the corners of the CPU, whereas my Cooling Fan has a Flat Bottom, will this leave an air gap between the CPU and the Cooler? Should this gap be filled with Heat Conducting Compound? Have I got the correct Cooler (the box says that it's for an AMD Duron/Athlon), or should I have one with a step in the bottom to match the CPU Heatsink? Sorry if these questions are a bit basic but I am a newbie to this Overclocking World. Thanks for any advice.

Welcome to the world of overclocking! The four rubber supports are intended to be just that: supports. Apply a small amount of thermal compound over the core itself. (Don't overdo it.)

I stick my forefinger into the corner of a baggie and then spread the compound with the tip of my finger. Then I use a credit card or single-edge razor blade to smooth it out and remove the excess.

Then put your HSF on and clamp it down. When you see how much pressure it uses you'll understand the need for the rubber supports.

Which HSF are you using?

Thanks for the advice Dan. The HSF that I am using is a 'Made in Taiwan'(Ball Bearing Fan) with the Brand name of 'COOLER'.I'll probably switch to something a bit more 'Up-Market' when I Upgrade to an Athlon.

I would make sure that your current heatsink is ok to use with the Duron. They get pretty hot ;). Maybe you should spend a few bucks and get a Volcano2 for now.?

Screw the Volcano.. get an Alpha with the Sanyo Denki fan.. it's a Duron anyway and that way the PC will be quiet..
