hi!

i am going to be purchasing a new computer soon.

here's what i got so far in terms of parts:

1. asrock z97 extreme6
2. G.SKILL Trident X Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200)
3. seasonic ssr-550 g series
4. fractal design define r4 mid tower silent case
5. intel core i7-4790K devil's canyon quad-core
6. intel 730 series ssd 240GB
7. noctua nh-d14 cooler
8. nvidia geforce 760

questions:

is this a good combo. (in terms of compatibility)?

specifically, i am wondering if the cooling fan (the noctua) will fit properly with this ram, motherboard, and case.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

cheers,

When you say that you've "got" the parts, do you mean that you physically have them (i.e. already bought them), or that you've got them on a list?

Need to know what your budget is, what you plan on doing with the computer and where you're purchasing your parts from before going any further. If you intend to do gaming on this PC your GPU is pretty old now and you have way more RAM than any gaming system will need anytime soon.

Will the parts work together? Yes, they will. What nsafreak is saying is that if you answer his questions, we may be able to find better parts for your purpose for less money.

hi guys!

okay syure!

it is actually for music production (digital audio workstation) as i go to school for this.

i live in canada, and have been looking at prices on newegg.ca.

this is why so much ram is needed.

not so much for gaming, but that would be nice bonus.

thanks again!

cheers,

Ok, the large amount of RAM makes sense in this case as does the i7 processor choice. However I would go with DDR3-1600 as opposed to DDR3-2400 since you still won't see a difference between the two for your uses. That will save you $50 in the bargain that can be applied elsewhere.

I do still want to know your budget though because depending on your DAW software it might take advantage of additional cores quite well so if it's within budget I might recommend an X99 setup with an i7 5820K instead. Also do you already have an external DAC or a sound card? I ask because while the built in audio might be sufficient for your standard consumer I'm a bit doubtful that it's good enough for professional purposes even if it is as a student.

hi!

thanks again, guys!

yes, i have an outboard soundcard.

i will look into the 6 core option!

i am wondering now: can faster ram actually make system more unstable? when would one benefit from 2400 over 1600?

what is the most stable 1600 on newegg.ca that would be compatible with my cooling fan/case/setup?

thanks again!

hi!

i have been looking into the ram now.

wow!

so many options!

here's an article about how 1866 ram is pretty good...whereas 2400 is overkill.

here are just a few newegg.ca options i found:

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-14900CL10D-16GBXL 139

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-1866C9D-16GXM 149

G.SKILL Ares Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-1866C10Q-32GAB 279

G.SKILL Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model F3-1866C8D-16GTX 189

(price is listed at the end of each item)

eek...help!

oh!

this looks good!

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-1600C9D-16GXM

$139CAD on newegg.ca too~

what do you guys think??

i am just not sure what impact ram speed has (if any) with using, say, pro tools--and i am finding it very difficult to find any info. on this.

people say that it makes a big difference when video editing, however.

help! i need to purchase very soon!

:)

I just noticed that you'd chosen the NH-D14 for a cooler, and that's fine.

Be aware -- it consumes enough case-volume to become a maintenance inconvenience. I'd look more closely at the specs for your chosen case against those of the D14, but I give it a reasonable chance for a fit. G.SKILL Ripjaws or similar will still fit under it, but removing the module closest to the CPU is a P-I-T-A. It can be done without removing the cooler, but it is still tedium.

Second, I'll say that there are better air-coolers for a few less ducats. And I mean "better" by 6C lower temperatures under higher TDP wattage than you'll have with a Devils Canyon chip. The one I discovered recently is about the size of any single-tower cooler. It had been "available" for four years -- under a different name, released a few months after the D14. PM me if you think it's worth exploring.

  • CPU coolers up to 170mm tall

Dimensions: (L)158mm x (W)140mm x (H)160mm

Girl, if you use short stand off's for the motherboard you should be OK. Only issue I might have is if the memory is on the compatibility list for the motherboard.

hi philly!

thanks.

so, what i think you are saying is the fit with the noctua fan and the case will be tight?

perhaps too much so?

any other suggestions on the fan?

also, half of people seem to be telling me ram speed doesn't matter with a daw, and the other half are telling me to max out on whatever my motherboard can handle.

any ideas on this?

i.e., does anyone know if ram frequency makes any difference in terms of heavy digital audio workstation sessions?

thanks again for the advice guys!

ciao,

i am thinking...hyper 212 evo for the cooling fan?

seems a lot cheaper...and performs very well in terms of temp.

does anyone know if this cooler will work inside the case i mentioned?

hi lehtv!

same goes for that one too :(

out of stock on newegg.ca

any other suggestions guys?

i obviously need quiet...but i thought that the case would take care of that!

that's why i thought the hyper evo would be fine...in that case...that you wouldn't be able to hear it...

but if there is a quieter option available on newegg. ca....this sounds even better!

bye for now guys!

Why do you have to buy everything together, if I may ask? Placing orders on different sites takes just minutes of your time.

From newegg.ca, I'd go with Freezer i30. PWM range is 400-1350RPM. Enable Silent PWM mode in the motherboard BIOS to avoid ramping it up to maximum at load... it should stay below 1000RPM at all times if you're lucky ;)

Here's another good one: Thermaltake Frio Silent 14, 300-700RPM with low noise adapter. The thin design avoids blocking DIMM slots which might be important in your case since you're using four tall DIMMs.
