Hello all,
i've spent last days reading threads here, i must tell you that this site is really cool and helpful. After like 6 years using my pentium 4 i finally collected the money to buy my new desktop, right now i am ready to buy all components but i'm scared about doing something wrong and here i need your help before sending the order.
I'm italian and i decided to buy all parts from Prokoo that is actually the best price site i've found so far for the items i'm gonna buy.
Before showing you the complete item list, i tell you that i will use this desktop for gaming and internet working, his main job will be for sure final fantasy XIV as it comes to my hand, and prolly some other MMORPG. Probably i will run it at a low resolution like 1280x1024, but maybe i will use a bit higher resolution later when i'll get a new monitor, the only thing i will probably buy later...
A nice guy from FFXIV core told me this was the best site to get informations about the building of my desktop. I won't wait more than a week to buy the new machine since my old PC is going to the end of his life. I must add also that i will move that desktop like a laptop (lol) since i bring it from office to home every week, so if you got any tip about another case able to fit same items, maybe a mid/mini tower or anyway a little one, i would really appreciate.

Here comes the list:

CASE : ANTEC NINE HUNDRED (with original fans included) ----------140 $
MOBO : ASUS P6T X58 (1366) ----------- 246 $
CPU : INTEL I7 920 BOX D0 (1366) (will use his fan) --------- 307 $
MEMORY : CORSAIR DDR3 1333 PC10666 6GB XMS3 CL9 classic 3x2 -------- 185 $
HARD DRIVE : WESTERN DIGITAL VELOCIRAPTOR 150 GB WD1500HLFS 16MB --------- 182 $
POWER SUPPLY : CORSAIR CMPSU-400CXEU 400W --------- 72$
VIDEO CARD : ASUS GEFORCE GTX 260 896 MB GDDR3 PCI-E2 --------- 260 $
PRIMARY OPTICAL DRIVE : DVD RW PIONEER DWR-S18L SATA NERO --------- 46 $ (only needed to read and maybe write some music, so cheap)
OPERATING SYSTEM : WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM 64 BIT ------- 127 $
ANTIVIRUS : KASPERSKY (i have it yet) 0 $

I must tell you that i won't upgrade any component later, and i won't use overclocking. So this is what i will spend and i think i won't buy nothing more in the future due to lack of money to use for it. Total money spent will be 1565 $

Now some questions that popped in my mind ...

1) will the power supply be enough with only 400w ?
2) it is better to buy a 4 GB memory of better quality instead of that one of 6 GB?
3) As video card, would be better to get a GTX260 gainward 1792 mb golden sample (same price if not lower) instead of the Asus i wanted to get ?? i decided for asus since the mobo is asus too -.-
4) If 400w of PSU are not enough, could you tell me something better without spending more money (-.-)?
5) with same amount of money, for the same kind of use, would your decision be different about mobo and cpu? (maybe i7 860?)

Please if you got any tips the only thing i ask is to not make me using more money since i really cannot. Help me out guys!

Thank you in advance^^

Why to not use the stock i7 fan? Guess the "box" means that the fan is inside, maybe i could buy just the CPU, but i don't have many money to spend on the fan, which one should i go for? ty for reply

I'm not sure whether it's readily available, but a 5770 would be a much better pick up. Unless you plan on ditching the card soon for DX11, I would plan for the future. If you have absolutely no plans to cfx/sli in the future, the Gigabyte UD3R is cheap and decent. The Corsair TX650 is a solid PSU. But a cheap alternative would be the OCZ Stealth/Mod/etc. xStream line.

Thank you very much for the answers i've got so far. About Ati video card, better a 5770 OC or the normal one? Because the price change a lot. Abount CPU fan, i really don't know anything about them, do you know which one could i fit into my antec 900? on the site where i'll buy all parts, there're some fans Zalman, Thermaltake, Artic Cooling and Cooler master. But i don't really know what to choose. I'll buy a CPU fan only if you tell me that the original one into the box is really a bad choice.

The i7 can be a hell of a hot chip, so I would DEFINITELY recommend an aftermarket cooler. Nothing beats a Scythe Mugen 2 in its price range. Snag one of those. Drop the velociraptor and pick up a WD Caviar Black 640 gb. It's blazing. The regular 5770 will do just fine. You can OC it yourself if you really want to. The Vapor-x model by Sapphire is a really good cooler (not sure if they ahve the 5770 but i think they do).

just found ASUS Radeon HD 5770 V2 - 1 GB GDDR5 - PCI-Express 2.0
on the site, it is any good? unfortunately i can't find vapor-x so i hope this
will be a cool choice, and it costs a lot less than GTX260. About the fan,
i can get Scythe Mugen 2 even if it's a bit expensive. Are you sure about the hard disk? Really velociraptor isn't worth the money it costs?

As the owner of 2 velociraptors, I am disappointed with the fact that windows scores them at the same level as any other drive. I am happy with my Zalman 9300 fan.

Just bought HD5770 vapor-x guys :D thank youvery much for the tip Misterdonut. It's the first piece i've got so far... as you see i'm really undecided about components :hmm:
Now, about the hard disk i'm ok getting a caviar black but for me 640 GB are really too much, i usually use 20-30 GB on my hard disk :\ so i really don't know what to do; about fan i've seen zalman and also Scythe Mugen 2 and Noctua also look really cool. Since i saved some money getting the 5770 i just have to understand which fan can work better. Thank you again for the help i've got so far.

I'm watching every kind of fan and found also this one :
Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme-1366 RT Rev.B with fan,
guess it will fix into a antec 900 case but it seems to me really too big -.-
I'd like to get something that fit in leaving more space to let the air moove better into the case but maybe i'm wrong... some ideas?

You're getting an Antec 900 for your case... you'll have plenty of air moving around even with the monolithic cpu heatsink in it.

I don't think velociraptors are worth it anymore with SSDs around.

erm... i promise this is last question!
Suppose i want to build exactly same Desktop but with a different case instead of antec nine hundred, possibly as much little as i can find, since i must move it from work to home everyday, which could be my best choice?? ^^

Portable? Do you want handles on the case, or a carry-strap?

Are you staying with the ATX format motherboard, or willing to go mATX (or even smaller)?

I'll have same setup as you can se on the first post, i was asking if i could
find a desktop easy to carry and with a little size, i'm searching about and found this :
http://www.gtrtechcorp.com/
But since initially i was going for a antec 900 , with this i would be very
happy for the size but really worried about the cooling system of a so little case...

Nice find with the GTR case. Air flow looks good and should work well with a stock i7 920.
You need to check motherboard compatibility (PCIe slot) and gfx card length (9"-9.5" max).
