Take a hammer for the tent stakes. I also make my own tent stakes from heavy gauge wire (like 1/4" thick wire) by bending a small (1") part 90 degrees (think an long 'L' where the bottom is 1" long) and griding them to a point on a metal grinding wheel (if you don't have a workshop this is probably beyond your ability).

The metal stakes NEVER go bad and won't snap in two like the plastic ones.

If your only option is plastic ones, get extra in case you break some off. You NEED to stake your tent down, never underestimate the wind.

Some fire-starting stuff is always handy. Newspapers work pretty well, just keep 'em dry

Wow! , that's nice.
Do you know of any brands that are a bit smaller than yours and could be towed with a mid-size pickup?
I'm only dealing with an OGF couple here, no kids, no pets.

I really like 5th wheels for a lot of reasons.

Don't put a tarp under your tent. Get two rolls of heavy duty plastic from Kmart or Walmart. Put the tarp overtop of your tent.
Huh??

You can by plastic for camping at Kmart and Walmart instead of using a tarp. Then you can throw the plastic away afterward and don't have to clean the dirt off the tarp.

If you're going to 10,000 you don't need a hammer or an axe. Use a rock and your boot. If you're white you gotta be real careful of sun burn. There's a whole lot less air up there protecting you from the sun. Watch your lips nose and ears. It could also get really cold at night.

and then you'd just trap stale air under it.

if you have an A frame tent point a narrow end into the wind to billow out the sides

OK - Gotcha !!
I thought you meant to not put anything on the ground under your tent.

Pretty much been covered.

Don't worry, you'll forget something. But you won't forget it next time. :p
