you'll only need an air pump if you have an inflatable mattress...I personally don't like them

Tents? Usually tents just have sticks/poles that hold it up.

make sure that you take things needed to prepare for food..

i cant even begin to count the number of times i've gone camping with other people who bring all this great food (steaks / chicken/ etc...) and then have forgotten to bring butter / salt... stuff like that.

or either that, they forget to bring a spatula or pan. So make sure you have all the cooking supplies that will be needed.

plenty of matches
FLashlights / lantern
Some sort of Saw-- not many campsites have pre-cut firewood laying around for you.

first aid kit most important.

and don't forget snacks... like trail mix and hard candies.

and your rain jacket... nothing is more miserable than camping in the rain w/o a rain jacket.

All depends on if you are camping along side your car or hiking in. If you're hiking make sure you like the food you take. Dehydrated meals are best. You will need a water purifier, they make small ones and they cost. Sleep on a foam pad, keeps you warm, it's light and somewhat soft. You'll need cookware. Take light cloth bags to put them in. They get lamp-blacked cooking on them and make a mess. Take a couple of rags. You will constantly want to wipe stuff like your hands. Take a rope so you can tree your food, a map and compass, know how to triangulate, in case you get lost. These helped me stay alive. Or GPS. I used to go way back in alone. Not recommended. Insect repellent, a white long life diode flash light. I used to use candles lanterns, but there's a risk of fire and diodes will run for days. A small white gas stove, one burner, is nice as is a cup of tea. They have bottled gas ones but I prefer white gas. No canisters to temp you to not carry out. A bell if your in grizzly country. Good shoes two underware two socks, mole skin, iodine, a hat and salt. Dark glasses. Knife and saw. Survival manual for something to read. Fly rod and flies. optional and fun. Light then and down bag. A light parka for rain.

Out of a car you can take your house, or buy what you forget. Can opener if you're eating from cans. There's a tiny one for back packers or use your knife. Waxed matches in reserve and a cheepo lighter relatively new and full of gas. Plastic is nice to put under our tent if you have to sleep on wet ground. A bag to hang your food. Extra white gas, naturally, in as plastic or aluminum bottle, leak proof. Tiny plastic funnel.

I think he's just planning on camping in the woods, not moving in Thoreau-style

Don't put a tarp under your tent. Get two rolls of heavy duty plastic from Kmart or Walmart. Put the tarp overtop of your tent.

These are the essentials:

1. Tent. Get a "footprint" and a water proof cover.
2. Camp Axe. A small portal one for chopping firewood, etc.
3. Sleeping bag. Get a "zero" degree bag.
4. Some sort of pad. Those self-inflating ones at REI are sweet, but kinda expensive. Air mattress or foam pad?
5. Lantern. I have one of those propane bottle where the light unit goes on top of the propane bottle. (Coleman)
6. Flashlight.
7. Mosquito repellant. I HATE those little suckers!! DIE!!! MURDER MURDER!!! DIE!!!
8. One of those folding, portable chairs. For sitting next to the camp fire.
9. First Aide Kit
10. Compass

Non-essential, but nice to have items:

11. Nice fishing pole
12. GPS (Global Positioning Units)
13. Portable DVD player. Hehe

if the tent is fairly new it probably has it's own tarp - ish rain cover.... use something water resistant to put under your tent though and tarps work great
